Boys & Girls: Yucatan World Cup (G1) - Merida, Mexico

A sprinkling of Brits have turned up in this event which leads onto the much more prestigous event Eddie Herr and Orange Bowl which take place later in the year. The primary aim for most of the participants will be to try and book a place in the Australian Open for 2009.

Although the Eddie Herr and Orange Bowl are more prestigious this tournament gives the best opportunity to pick up big points as it is a Grade 1 (like Eddie Herr) but there are only 4 girls and one boy ranked in the top 50.

R1
Jozef KOVALIK (SVK) defeated Alastair BARNES (GBR) (11) 6-2 7-5

R1
Natalie BEAZANT (GBR) defeated Victoria RODRIGUEZ (MEX) 6-1 6-2

R2
Emi MUTAGUCHI (JPN) Vs Tara MOORE (GBR) (13)
Olivia BENNETT (TRI) Vs Hannah JAMES (GBR) (6)
Heather WATSON (GBR) (5) Vs Gaia SANESI (ITA)
Kyra SHROFF (IND) (8) Vs Natalie BEAZANT (GBR)

Tara and Heather should easily win (Heather's opponent was beaten by Natalie recently 2&4). I would rate Hannah as 50/50 but I can't see Natalie winning.

I'm glad to say I underestimated Hannah's chances.

R2
Hannah JAMES (GBR) (6) beat Olivia BENNETT (TRI) 6-2, 6-1

The other girls are playing now I think.

Looks like an excellent day in Mexico:

R2
(13) Tara MOORE (GBR) d. Emi MUTAGUCHI (JPN) 6-4 4-6 6-1
(6) Hannah JAMES (GBR) d. Olivia BENNETT (TRI) 6-2 6-1
(5) Heather WATSON (GBR) d. Gaia SANESI (ITA) 6-2 6-1
Natalie BEAZANT (GBR) d. (8) Kyra SHROFF (IND) 6-4 6-1

R3:

(1) Ana BOGDAN (ROM) / Valentina NOVELO (Mex) v. (13) Tara MOORE (GBR)
Madison KEYS (US) v. (6) Hannah JAMES (GBR)
(5) Heather WATSON (GBR) v (12) Eugenie BOUCHARD (CAN)
Natalie BEAZANT (GBR) v (9) Alejandra GRANILLO (MEX)

Magnificent win by Natalie over the Commonwealth Youth Games silver medallist, ranked 400 places higher. Hannah and Heather tackle talented youngsters next: Bouchard is 14 whilst Keys is only 13.

Tara could do Laura Robson a big favour in the race for the year end junior #1 ranking if she knocks out Ana Bogdan here, as she is one of the few in the top 10 still playing junior tournaments.

True, though she would do herself an even bigger favour, as she has a lot of points to defend and improve on during this tournament, Eddie Herr and Orange Bowl if she wants to gain direct entry to the Australian Open. Heather is in the more inviting half of the draw, vacated already by the number 2 seed Mladenovic.

Looking at Tara's record, most of her points (QF in both singles and doubles worth 67.5 points) are at this tournament. Ana Bogdan will be a challenge, but reaching the doubles QF should be a much easier task against two local girls ranked 878 & 1445. If all goes well, that QF will be against Heather & Hannah.

She only has 27.5 points to defend from the other two tournaments, so has a very good chance to improve her ranking there - two singles wins over the two events would be enough, although, of course, she'll be wanting a lot more than that for Oz.
