RE: Masters Cup 2008 - RR - Andy Murray v Gilles Simon

Simon serving to stay in the match at 1-5...

15-00 Murray goes for an ambitious return winner and misses
15-15 Awful forehand from Simon
15-30 Awful backhand from Simon
30-30 Good forehand from Simon
40-30 Andy's saving himself for his service game
Game Simon. Andy's return is long.  Murray leads 6-4 *5-2.

Perhaps he wanted to listen to some more tunes at the changeover as Andy was about 12% there mentally in the last game. Another falsetto classic (this time from the Scissor Sisters) gets Andy ready.

Andy serving at 6-4 5-2

00-15 Good attacking from Simon, finding the corners
15-15 Return long
15-30 Andy hits long
30-30 First serve sets up the point.
40-30 Wide first serve sets up the point but Andy still needs a good overhead to win it. Match point.

GSM Andy! 6-4 6-2. Semi-finals here we come. smile

Great result! I was a bit worried towards the end of the first set, but it seems like Simon didnt seem to have the composure on the break points?

So if Federer loses next then Murray is top of the group (and Fed is out)!

I think that's fair - if Simon had played the break points in the same way he played the rest of the points (at least in the first set), he'd have broken a couple more times. In the end his whole game fell apart.

Andy did very well there - he kept his level up throughout. Given half a chance, Simon would have been happy to roll him over, as he's done to most of the big players recently.

If Federer loses to Spepanek, then Andy certianly finishes ahead of both Simon and Federer.  I am not quite sure how Stepanek stands.  Is he allowed even to qualify ?  Theoretically he could have 2 wins and beat Andy on set difference.

If Stepanek can qualify then Federer would be out, since one of him and Simon would win their last match and hence have 2 wins.

By the way, I need new specs.  I had thought I'd read that Andy was playing noon today.

Went on to the ATP site to see how Federer was doing, and saw that Andy was 6-4, 5-2 up, ah....

I didn't pay for Masters TV to watch Stepanek !!   smile

Sorry yes you are right, I forget that Roddick took a set off Murray. Stepanek simply becomes Roddick as it were and so can qualify.

Stepanek inherits Roddicks loss, but as he has an extra set (from Roddick) he could still finish above Murray.

Quote from Murray on the BBC

Stepanek's turned up without his own racquets, he borrowed some socks off me earlier and he hasn't got his contact lenses either. So I knew I had to win the match because I can't see him winning too many games. I was a bit nervous because I knew I had to come through.
WTF? How is it possible that this could happen?

Its the end of the season, players are getting injured all over the place, you manage to get first reserve for a competition where you can get $100,000 just for winning a game and you don't event bring your kit?

I fail to understand this, its not like he has to take masses of stuff with him either, but he doesnt even have a racquet? Please...

I see he just broke Federer as well, awesome.

It is in a way quite funny though, just imagining Andy' reaction to all this.

***ing hell, Fed and Simon are going to thrash that guy, hell I better beat Simon in straight sets here.  biggrin
