Really seems lacking in energy - says he's still suffering from jetlag and has been going to bed about this time. Oh well, at least he won but hope that 2nd set won't count for anything. Simon looked in pretty good form so Andy needs to improve his consitency.
That second set was worrying. Andy looked tired, couldn't seem to get his first serve in for love or money, kept hitting the top of the net (and the ball kept going the wrong way when he did).
Full marks to him for pulling himself together in the third - because Roddick didn't seem to be playing at a worse level to me, it was just that Andy moved up a gear when he had to.
I dont really understand this excuse about jetlag. Does this mean he is not taking the competition seriously?
He could have been out here a good 4 or 5 days even with a weeks rest after Paris, so to say he is tired is a bit unprofessional. Does anyone know when he came out?
Also I would expect Roddick to be more jetlagged after only coming out on Saturday/Sunday and coming from America (I presume).
With Federer losing it does open up the group quite a bit though, it gives Murray a good chance to dump Fed out of the competition (probably) if he beats him, but if he loses then there could be a complicated 3 way tie at the top!
Andy looked to be playing pretty agressively, and actually when they showed the match stats they were quite surprising in some ways. Andy very clearly had many more winners and also quite a few more unforced errors than Roddick. He also clearly outaced Roddick at 9 to 3 ( 4 DFs to 1 DF ), although by his anticipation he must just get to so many more of Roddick's serves than most folk get near.
Service stats actually look OK ( well for Andy ), overall 63% first serves in, and even 60% in the second set.
The Simon result, combined with Andy dropping the 2nd set, is potentially not helpful. If Simon and Federer both dispatch Roddiock in straight sets, coiuld get tricky. Of course, as long as Andy just keeps on winning....
Flying west to east is generally accepted as being worse jet-lag wise.
The issue is that you have a short day, that you have lost 8 hours, so you really have to get to sleep and wake up much earlier than your body wants to, ideally in a few stages. The body actually quite likes the longer days, going the other way, effectively you can just have a very long day, get really tired, have long sleep and you are just about fixed.
However, Andy has got seriously strangely out of kilter if he has been going to bed at match time !! That is at 8 pm Shanghai time, and noon UK time, doesn't make a great deal of sense !? The initial problem is that your body is behind Shanghia time, so how Andy seems to have got a few hours ahead of it, who knows ? Unless he is talking **** ?
Pretty sure it's Simon up next as usually 2 winners play each other?
I wondered about that, since there didn't seem to be a preordianed schedule. That sounds remarkably sensible for the ATP i.e. avoids the possibility of 2 kind of dead rubbers for the third round of matches ( although the average man would still quite like the money for the win !! and it is still 100 ranking points ).
A straight sets win over Simon would be very helpful in the grand scheme of things.
Yep, matches on Wednesday - first up Fed v Roddick followed by Andy/Simon. Matches will start at the same time as today - that's according to Sky Sports.
Assessing his qualification chances, Murray said: "Well, the winner of my match with Simon is going to go through to the semis. I guess the chance of me qualifying has gone up pretty significantly after winning the match today. But in terms of winning it (the group) there's a good chance I might still have to win two more matches to do that."
No, even if Andy beats Simon, Simple, Fed and himself could still all end on 2 wins apiece and Andy could go out on set difference. Beating just Fed from now would be enough, but beating just Simon two sets to one might not be.
As far as I can see though, a straight sets win over Simon would get him to the semis. Then, although, Federer could beat them both on sets differece, the worst sets position Andy could have would then be 4 - 3, which would be the best Simon could have. I understand it would next be on head to head so Andy would go through based on that. So, straight sets win, please.

I somehow missed this when I read the thread earlier in the day. Andy flew out last Tuesday morning, you would think he would be over the jet-lag - but I suppose it may affect different people different ways.
