Boys: 2008 Junior Davis Cup - San Luis Potosi, Mexico

The Junior Davis Cup for under 16s starts today in Mexico, with 16 nations divided into 4 round robin groups. The British team of Ashley Hewitt, James Marsalek and George Morgan (under the captaincy of Greg Ruedski) is seeded 8th and finds itself in Group D:

India [2]
Brazil
Mexico
Great Britain [8]

They open up today against the host nation according to the ITF overall draw, but the separate day 1 schedule says it is Brazil.

Is Ashley Hewitt related to Tim? (Or Leyton?)

I am not aware of any relationship between Ashley and Tim - they play for different but neighbouring counties.

We were the only nation not to deploy our number 1 (James), so he may have picked up an injury. The doubles was abandoned for the day at 1 set all.

The doubles rubber against Brazil was lost, so they lost that tie 1-2.

In their next tie against India, each team won one singles rubber - GB no. 3 Ashley Hewitt beat Indian no. 2 Saurabh Singh 6-4 6-7(5) 6-4 but GB no. 1 James Marsalek got thrashed 1 & 0 by the very strong Indian no. 1 Yuki Bhambri.

Again, the doubles rubber had to be held over to the following day, but with Bhambri in the Indian pair (against Marsalek and George Morgan), I fear they might lose that tie too.

As Steven feared GB lost 2-1 to India, Ashley Hewitt and George Morgan losing 6-4, 7-6(6) to Yuki Bhambri and Saurabh Singh. This means that we cannot qualify for the semi-finals.

GB won their final match 2-1 against Mexico and so play Latvia in the 9th-12th place play-offs.

George Morgan beat Alexis Carlos 6-3, 3-6, 7-5
James Marsalek lost to Fernando Larrea beat 4-6, 6-2, 6-1
Hewitt/Morgan beat Carlos/Fernandez 6-4, 6-4

Ashley Hewitt said: "To beat Mexico on home turf is wonderful. Everyone was so positive, the mental strength was there, the commitment and it all came together in the end. Now we want to finish as high as we possibly can because we want to do our best.

India won all 3 matches to progress to the semis from this group

An encouraging end to the tournament. You can 'hear' the Greg influence in Ashley Hewitt's comments LOL
