Girls: China Open - ITF G2

China are holding a couple of ITF tournaments with a G3 next week.  The Ren sisters are also going on to compete in a Hong Kong G4 the week after.

According to the acceptance list, this event is being attended by a good number of British players including Hannah James, Stephanie Cornish, Jen Ren and Laura Slater.

QR1:
Jess Ren (1) beat BAI, Sheng-Mei (CHN) 2-6 6-2 6-2
Hannah Martin-Merchant (5) beat YIN, Xianghong (CHN) 3-6 7-5 6-2

QR2:
Jes Ren (1) lost to DONG, Xiaorong (CHN) 6-1 6-0 weirdface
Hannah Martin-Merchant (5) lost to ZHANG, Kai-Lin (CHN) 6-1 6-3 cry

A bit surprised by those results - I would expect those two to sail through the qualifiers.  Dong is only 13 and in her first tournament. All the players in the FQR are from China.

MD1:
REN, Jennifer (GBR) lost to ISSARA, Khunpak (THA) (8) 6-3 6-3 cry
CORNISH, Stephanie (GBR) beat MARTIN-MERCHANT, Hannah (GBR) 6-1 6-4 smilecry
REN, Jessica (GBR) lost to EJDESGAARD, Malou (DEN) (7) 6-0 6-3 cry
SLATER, Laura (GBR) lost to TANG, Haochen (CHN) 6-4 6-2 cry
JAMES, Hannah (GBR) (5) beat KUMKHUM, Luksika (THA) 7-5 6-3 smile

Rather disappointing results - had much higher hopes for the Ren sisters and Laura Slater.

what surface is this on ?

if its clay that might explain why the Rens and Slater have struggled while Cornish has done well

According to the ITF site it is being played on hard, which doesn't make anything any clearer as to the strange defeats.

Steph "Corn-dog" Cornish is through to the final with a comfortable 6-4 6-2 win, it will be Steph's first G2 final & it will be played at the site on the China Open on centre court we believe!!!
Great week for her although Steph & Hannah lost the doubles final 6-4 6-4.

Nice going Corn-Dog!

Lap up the atmosphere. You can be there for real in seniors with some belief and hard work!

Steph "corndog" Cornish takes the title!!!!!! Her first G2 title & a debut in the top 100 awaits Miss C as she beats Australia's Mia Vriens 6-3 3-6 6-3, this is the same girl that smoked Hannah James 6-1 6-0 earlier in the tournament!!

A great week for Steph, who also made the doubles final alongside an impressive Hannah James & I really hope she can build on it in Xiamen & Osaka over the next few weeks!!

very well done to steph-well deserved. However goldenslam you forgot to mention that when hannah got beaten she had been very unwell and had to take antibiotics so the her result was not entirely reflective.
Lets hope they can win the next doubles and both do well in the singles

I was not aware that Hannah had been unwell but the score went totally against how she had played all week, as I said she had been very impressive & was playing some very good tennis.
Fingers crossed she is ok for the next 2 weeks!

Thanks, Cate and Gs; it's really pleasing to have up-to-date reliable information like this, rather than just scores over which to puzzle.
