One thing I can't see anybody has mentioned - Andy was clutching at his knee quite a lot. It definitely affected his movement. I'm not saying he would have won, but I think it would have been closer.
Very disappointing. Fed hasn't had to step out of second gear. Apart from the couple of games in the second set where Andy should've gone a break up there's only been one player who was ever going to win. Murray's been too short all night, when he's kept Federer behind the baseline he's been winning points but they've been few and far between.
Which is a shame, because yesterday Andy proved he has the game to live with these guys, and I think if he'd made Federer push a bit harder he could've forced more errors from him. Maybe in a years time with more work on the fitness and the mental strength he'll be able to string a few performances together, but he's clearly got a way to go yet.
I couldn't disagree more. I thought Federer played out of this world in the first set - nothing Andy could do. Second set Andy was the better player, and if he had actually challenged one of the calls at 2-2 15-40 in the second set he would have gone a break ahead.
I don't think fitness and mental strength have anything to do with it. He's proved that with three four set (inc. one against Nadal) and one five set victory this championships. Federer just played two good on the day, playing like that there is no-one that can challenge him on a hard court.
Two criticisms of Andy tonight. a) Winning the toss and returning. Always hate that as the cons by far outweigh the pros. b) Overplayed the lob when Roger came to the net, he should have tried to pass more often.
But Vandenburg, I don't think you have any clue about how well Federer played tonight. I think you should go away and watch some more tennis.
Well done Andy - Great fortnight. Don't blame the scheduling (It will even out over his career) - what a platform for 2009!
I think federer played as well as he needed to gain the win,he could have always stepped it up,but im affraid next to murray he did look another class, and the possible breaks in the 2nd set were crucial..
as for watching tennis tho its not a cv competition, ive have travelled to 17 futures events over the last 6 years in the UK.
I love it when people declare it's not about "CV's" but then just slip something in! Classy
im not claiming to be some tennis expert like andrew castle on GMTV, i just dont think its very graceful to tell someone to go to watch more tennis for having a differing opinion....
yes andy done well and hell prob have a open top bus in scotland but tough love is also needed from the media at most.
yes he does i think, he blizted it. i thinkhe has a beamer doesnt he?
i remb reading a blog about a year ago abot how he didnt have hs licence and his friend (carlos..i think) had his liecence but had hadnt driven since he got it. And they went to get food or something and almost crashed...funny blog
Shame. I didn't expect that but I guess it is understandable, having used up so much energy getting to the final. US Open finals tend to be very one-sided and this was no exception.
Superb effort this tournament. Roger played great in the first and third sets. The second set was Andy's big chance and he just didn't seem willing to go on the attack. Unlucky about the ball that was out on break point but not called.
The media slag him off all day every day because he once wore a Paraguay shirt and they consider him grumpy.
Since when does someone who has just made their first Grand Slam final need tough love? I'm all for differing opinions. Mine is different to your lesser one! (Scouse sarcasm! )
I fully agree there should be no Bus tour, knigthood or Sports Personality award. This kind of thing embarrases British sports stars. Save awards and titles for champions and the retired.
I'm really please that Roger has won this. Proved he's still the Fed.
Top 4 will be great next year...
Still not all that many players have an even H2H with him.
Top 4 will definitely be great. Top 4 seeds do not meet until the semis at soonest. If he can maintain that through the indoor season - and he is good indoors - to the AO, where he only has 5 points to defend, he should be firmly entrenched there for a while.
