Fairly even set but Andy got the decisive break when Stan went wide with a forehand. First serve percentage is too low but otherwise still a good display.
Andy was sensational! - he can do so many things on a tennis court: brutal first serve, superb feel on the return, double-handed backhand was unbelievable tonight. Forehand was very good, just one or two loose shots amongst a lot of accurate aggressive ones. Drop shots worked most of the time, very quick around the court retrieving Stan's aggressive groundstrokes and forcing him to hit one more. Mixed up the pace and the spins, came into the net to finish points.
He seemed in the zone throughout the match, focused on getting the match over with in 3 sets. Really impressive.
Noticeable that Stan didn't go after Andy's second serve till very late in the match. Instead he retreated deep behind the baseline to return yet he still did quite well winning points on second. Wawrinka wasn't at his best but his level was ok. He played a lot of well constructed points, his first serve percentage was perfectly reasonable, don't think he had any double faults.
Of all tyrannies a tyranny exercised for the good of its victim may be the most oppressive.... those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience
best sustained performance - he dropped his level a bit 2nd and 3rd set - but didnt allow his opponent to develop any real conviction to his play. If I was a Swiss fan I'd be frustrated at Wawrinka's lack of fight especially in the 3rd set - but Andy deserves a lot of credit for giving him so few glimmers of hope to mount a comeback.
Got up at 5 to watch on Sky+ and couldn't believe what I was watching. Each time I thought he can't keep this level up he pretty much did. As has been said he did drop a bit at times in the 2nd & 3rd but no-one could keep playing as well as that.
At times I thought Wawrinka was decent but I felt he had to play daft tennis just to try and keep up with Andy and that just frustrated him more. I think the positive is there is still room for improvement and yet that was about as good as I can remember for a whole match. So aggressive instead of waiting for the error really enjoyable.
Now THAT is good news to wake up to (crept out of bed early to check teletext!)
More of the same next round Andy. Del Potro will try to get him annoyed, I'm pretty sure, but if Andy gets on top early and stays there he should keep his composure.
