Starts at midnight British summer time. 7pm Toronto.
They have met 4 times before. Nadal has won each time though Andy played well in a couple of the meetings and should have won in Australia.
Wim 3-6 2-6 4-6 Hamburg 3-6 2-6 Madrid 6-7 4-6 Aus 7-6 4-6 6-4 3-6 1-6
Having destroyed Gasquet, you'd expect Rafa to do the same to Andy, given the form that Murray showed against Djokovic. But Andy may well adopt a more proactive approach and hopefully, will get a lot more first serves in play.
I took a quick look at Andy's first serve percentage against the top 3 and the numbers are truly wretched. He averages 48%, regularly serving below 45%, though his stats are somewhat better against Nadal with one match at 62%.
I feel Murray does have the weapons to beat Nadal but lacks the ability to execute on a consistent basis. If Andy is to be competitive he will have to be super aggressive, mixing up serve and volley, with huge forehands, going for his double-handed backhand crosscourt and down the line, and looking to attack the net to put away straight forward volleys. He needs to return far more aggressively than he did at Wimbledon, and he can't afford to be passive at any point in the rally, as he is so often prone to be.
Another good test for Andy but I'd be surprised if he was up to the task.
Ouch, another late-nighter. I hope to watch it if I can catch a nap sometime today!
Hopefully Andy is as up for this match as he was against Djokovic. I can't see him winning it, but hey, that's what I said last match! Time to start turning another 0-4 H2H around?
Yes, this Murray guy might be quite a good player when he learns to serve consistently He always has the ability to break, but you tend to feel that he is going to have to do that at least twice to win most sets.
Actually last night it appeared Andy was giving a bit more on second serve than he often does, and I noticed no double faults.
So why the wretched first serve % ? OK, obviously he is going for a lot more, but sometimes I have the impression he just stands up and gives it a blast. I'm not even the beginnings of a coach, but I actually just think if he actually also tried more to really concentrate on getting it in, he might have more success. OK, I'm sure he's trying, to a degree, but there seems to me an element of bang, OK I've got a second service.
Anyway, yes, I hope the service is performing better, and that he remembers to stay aggresive, then you never know.
I do take Nadal to win, although not as easily as the last 2 meetings. I hope I am as correct with this prediction of the winner, as I was for the Djokovic match.
Oh dear. The first semi has only played one point before yet more rain.
I was thinking of staying up to watch Andy on AMSTV but at this rate they will be playing right in the middle of the night (if at all), and I'm too old for that lark!
Good luck Andy, but realistically it's not going to happen. If Andy can find his best first serve, and best backhand (both of which were missing against the Djoker), he might have a chance, but I can't see him doing it. I hope I'm wrong
"Drew", noticed from another thread that you'd got the CalMac to Islay. Can I ask why? I know there's the half marathon next week, and the Islay "Show" the following week, but what's on this week? I ask as the son of an Ěleach (native of Islay). You brought back many, unpleasant, memories of the Islay ferry, and the road to Tarbert, but many great memories of Islay.
OK, Andy missed a few shots in the tiebreak, but the gameplan has been good, he has stayed aggrsesve a lot of the time.
Backhand has been working really well too, so much so that Nadal is steering everything he can to the forehand, which did falter a bit in the tiebreak.
I hope there's no real problem with his knee after timeout at end of first set.
