It's amazing how often LL's win though, and practically every time they make the draw, they end up winning a round.

Great draw.. Meng is a pusher.. Plain and simple.. Shes well known among the british players but if Mel comes on her game she should be able to dispose of Yuan the way Yuan disposed of the CTA. :p Did you hear about that story with Yuan and the CTA?

I think Mel just gets the 35 points for reaching R3.

Lucky Losers earn only the Main Draw Ranking points based on the highest round reached in the Main Draw
unless they lose in the 1st round of the Main Draw in which case they receive only the Ranking points earned
in the Qualifying.

The rule (XIV.B.6.b.iii) is pretty ambiguous - it says "Lucky Losers earn Main Draw ranking points based on the highest round reached in the Main Draw, unless they lose in the 1st round of the Main Draw, in which case they receive only the ranking points earned in qualifying."

Firstly, that reads as if Mel would have got R2 points had she lost in R2 having had a bye in R1 (surely she'd have only got FQR points in that case) and it says that if you lose in R1, you only get FQR points, but it doesn't say you don't get FQR points if you lose in a later round of the main draw.

Edit: you're right, I just checked Morigami who got a LL place in the Tier II in Dubai then won a main draw match - she only got the main draw points, so Elena stays a point ahead (for now) after all.

There are now no seeds left in Mel's quarter of the draw.

If Mel doesn't fall asleep during the match, she has a great chance to win this, as Yuan is quite simply the most boring tennis player I've ever seen play.

The only concern I have is that Mel will get frustrated at Yuan just dumping every ball back in court with no interest in hitting winners, and will miss far too often, but if she plays a good, controlled-agressive match, she could blow Yuan off the court if she hits a lot of winners.

It's a stunning draw for a R16 in a Tier II event though, and even though I'd have Yuan as the favourite, I think Mel could win this if she has a good day.

EDIT: Just had a look at the draw... as that bottom quarter that Mel is in would look weak in a Tier IV event... no-one is that frightening, so although it's very unlikely, there's a slim chance of a semi final here

That's the luckiest bit of the lucky loser place of course - Serena's withdrawal turned that quarter from quite scary to not very scary at all.

This all has echos of Big Arv's LL run in Rotterdam a couple of years ago, though I hope Mel doesn't go on to score hardly any points afterwards and then retire when the thought of having to defend the points next year becomes too much! wink

Great stuff from mel and a winnable match next. Agree with most peoples assessment. A nice controlled aggressive game could see her win comfortable but if she oer presses could be a routine loss.

Mel would stand more chance against Mirza than Yuan (who leads their H2H 1-0). Yuan's game matches up well to both Mirza and Mel, as she can absorb the pace and let them make errors, as both are prone to do. Anyway we'll see soon, as it is due to start just after 9, just as Andy finishes probably.

Not a great start for Mel... (although Yuan had a worse start, beginning the match with a foot fault, which I've never seen happen before)
