64 62. Unbelievable... I thought she would lose by something like that as Kvitova is going places soon.

That's a great win for Mel. The girls are certainly both getting and taking their opportunities - not consistently, but sufficiently often recently to give them some confidence and a good rankings boost. Well done to them.

Congratulations Mel! That really is taking advantage of being a Lucky Loser! First WTA main draw outside the UK, parachuted into the second round, and she wallops a player who is streets better than the one she comprehensively lost to in qualifying (best win outside the UK on ranking incidentally).

See how nicely she planned it all. smile.gif Tank in the qualies match, getting a bye into the second round, followed by a win. Minimum effort, maximum returns.

Great stuff. A very happy LL. serendipity used nicely.

35 points for the win; does she also get the 5 qualies points?

Should put her up around 140 I think.

Both Yuan and Mirza's form have been decidedly sketchy recently. I know it's always hard to follow one unexpected win with another but she must feel she has a chance.

I guess a win against Yuan wouldn't be a big shock to be fair though.

Wow, what a great win smile.gif - obviously she'd been given a great chance, but the Brits don't usually taken them as well as that. That scoreline too! smile.gif

I believe she does get the 5 points for reaching the fqr too, so that should take Mel into the high 130s (my estimate using my usual GB top 25 table method is 136), almost certainly a career high and it will make her GB no. 2 unless Elena wins in Lexington later tonight.

What a surprise!!!!

Great win for Mel, and wonderful that she took advantage of the fact she was a LL, and her next match isn't unwinnable by any means, so a very surprising QF could be on offer here.

It's amazing how often LL's win though, and practically every time they make the draw, they end up winning a round.

No she doesn't get her 5 points for FQR, the 35 points replace them.

Great going Mel South. I assume she just went for her winners again like at Wimbledon and with nothing to lose it all paid off! clap.gif
