Girls: 4th Junior Open der Stadt Wels - ITF Grade 1 - 2008.

In Austria, and it's on clay.

Jessica Ren (SE)
Heather Watson (Qualifier)

All info can be found here - http://www.itf-juniors-wels.at/

This tournament features few of the best 1994 born girls out there - Mestach, Jez Ren, Bouchard and Kovalets. Sadly Bouchard and Kovalets faced off in qualies and Kovalets won in 3.

What luck! Jessica got an unranked wild card.

Jessica REN (GBR) Vs Christine KANDLER (AUT)
Heather WATSON (GBR) Vs Paula KANIA (POL)

Kandler is 1994 born, though, so she's going to improve. Kania is ranked 166 and is definitely beatable.

Jessica won 36 62 62. First set scare, but then she remembered that losing this one would be a huge opportunity wasted.

Heather demolished her opponent by 2 and 0. clap.gif

Jessica plays Martina Trevisan of Italy, who is November 1993 born but already ranked 88. I guess Jessica will have played her sometime in singles or doubles on the 14s circuit?
Will be very tough, though, and she needs to step up a lot.

Heather gets Anastasia Mukhametova of Russia, 1992 born and ranked 108. Seems to be a good clay player as she beat Rus this year, plus reached the quarters of Santa Croce (losing to Konta). Tough, but very winnable if Heather plays like she did today.

Jen Ren managed to sneak in a last minute LL and proceeded to beat her R1 opponent:

Jen Ren beat Andrea Konjuh (Cro) (108) 7-5 3-4 ret.

She now plays Sofie Oyen of Belgium.

All 3 girls are playing doubles - interesting that Jen and Jess are ot playing together.

Jennifer lost 75 36 36. cry.gif Good fight against the seed.

Jessica lost by 63 61. cry.gif Not a surprise and it's okay.

Heather won by 5 and 1. smile.gif

Now Heather plays second seed Richel Hongenkamp, who's a fine player. Not much chance there, but Heather is playing very well here, so who knows.

Singles results not up, but Heather and Sally Peers of Australia are through to the doubles semis.

So the US Open dream lives on for Heather - She just needs both the titles here, haha. wink.gif She'll do qualies anyway, I believe.

Heather beat Hogenkamp by 76 76. jawdrop.gif She followed that by a 62 63 win over Sophia Kovalets, which means she is in the semis.

The US Open dream still lives on!

Heather now plays Sandra Roma [36], who is the younger sister of the serial Brit killer, Nadja Roma. Nadja beat almost everyone in our top 1000 (including Anne and Mel) in 2006.

Anyway, Sandra Roma returned from an injury this May and she found form instantly, with an 18-4 record since then, including the Grade 1 title in Germany last week. Heather will need to play like against Hogenkamp to have a chance.

Whatever the result, she has done brilliantly this week. This is one of the strongest Grade 1s out there that's not a warm up to a Slam, and if she can make semis here then she has a great chance of doing well at 10Ks/25Ks, if she does them later this year.

Lost by 36 76 62. cry.gif Into the doubles final, though.

If only the LTA had let her play 18s in the the Euros, she would have had a good chance of getting into the USO.

She got the doubles title. clap.gif What a week it has been!

Her ranking will go up to roughly 83 from 150. May not get her a top 8 seeding at USO qualies, but there's a Grade 3 two weeks before USO that she could do.
