World Junior Tennis 2008.

Starts from 4th August and is played in Prostejov, Czech Republic, on clay.

I hope teams will be -

Girls: Laura Robson, Jessica Ren and Joanna Henderson (this one's sort of confirmed).
Boys: Liam Broady, Luke Bambridge, Conor Bunting/Jonathan Cornish (it's more likely that it'll be Broady, Cornish and Bunting).

We have won this twice - 1995 (boys - Hilton, Simon Dickson and Mackin) and 2004 (boys - Cox, Barnes, Evans). This is incredibly prestigious and we are one of the favourites for the girls' event this year with Robson playing as our number 1 and Jessica as our number 2.

Looks like a great chance to win the girls event. Russia will be tough with Gavrilova. Maybe Laura can finally beat her.

Yep! Revenge would be great.

But one thing - should Robson play this? I am not 100% on either side.
On one hand, it'll be great if we win the tournament and it can't hurt Laura given that she'll be able to play a handful of international tourneys before December (the women's and two or three Juniors).
On another, there's absolutely nothing she can gain from this given that she's now easily the best 14 year old in the world. She'll prove nothing even if she wins all her matches by 3 and 2 (but she could lose - upsets and bad days are always there)...

I know what you mean but if GBR win its a good bit of PR for the LTA so they want Robson in.

Robson, Ren and Henderson are a pretty tough team to beat.

That's my whole worry. I don't want Laura doing events just for PR.

But if her coaches think it's a good move for her tennis - so be it. So far her scheduling has been nothing short of genius!

No surprises with the teams.

Girls - Robson, Jez Ren and Henderson.
Boys - Broady, Cornish and Bunting.

If you aren't familiar with the format, the teams are divided into four groups of four. The four group winners progress and then there's KO to decide the winner. Each tie is decided by two singles rubbers and a doubles rubber (if needed).

Group for the boys - Britain, Brazil, India, Egypt.
Group for the girls - Britain, Bolivia, Australia, Tunisia.

Horrible group for the boys. doh.gif Karim Hossam of Egypt and Pedro Dumont of Brazil are two of the five or so best clay players in the world. Good luck, anyway, and it can be done.

Is it just me, or does a team with Broady and Cornish in it sound like a GB women's team? smile.gif

The girls won 3-0. Those two results, plus Laura and Joanna won the doubles by 0 and 1.

The boys won by 2-1.

Liam lost by 64 46 63 to Hossam. cry.gif No surprise there and Liam did very well, in fact.
Bunting beat Sherif Abo Habaja by 64 36 36. smile.gif
Then those two won the doubles by 1 and 1.

Tomorrow the boys play Brazil and the girls play Tunisia. Liam will have to face Dumont now, which will be very tough.
