Girls: European Junior Championships - 2008.

Starts from 21st July and of course it's on clay.

Venues -

18s: Bad Hofgastein, Austria.
16s: Moscow, Russia.
14s: Pilzen, Czech Republic.

All info can be found here if you surf around a bit.

Nominations will be announced soon. I want -

18s - Tara Moore, Heather Watson (Konta is probably ineligible).
16s - Laura Robson, Jennifer Ren.
14s - Jessica Ren, Joanna Henderson.

The situation with Robson is funny! She can choose any one of the three divisions and she'll be one of the favourites for all. There's no point in 14s because she's good enough for the levels above.
If she does 18s at this, she probably won't do 18s at Summer Cup and vice versa. I think it's better to do 16s at this as it'll be a warm up for 18s in the following week.

I take it this is not an ITF event and therefore doesn't count towards Laura's quota of tournaments?

The 18 events does as you get ranking points for the 18's

Anybody in a mood to ponder as to how weird the human mind can be? Well, you have a chance because the nominations for 18s are Lereesa Easterbrook and Amanda Carreras. confused.gif

Hopefully someday I'll be enlightened enough to understand those. Till then, the best explanation that I can come up with is that they took the names of all British players under 18 and then drew lots.

At least this proves that Carreras isn't going to play for Spain.

Well if you care to look at the WTA Ladies Rankings you will see that Amanda is now Ranked 14th in the UK  and equal in points to the Second Highest Junior Player (Curtis). Maybe the LTA have finally seen sence!!...smile

It's not about being good enough or not. Opportunities at Juniors (wild card, nominations etc.) are all about how much the players can gain out of them in the long run.

Amanda Carreras doesn't play Juniors and it's too late to start (not that it's a bad thing - whatever floats her boat). I am most impressed by how well she has done this summer, but there's absolutely NOTHING she can gain tenniswise (sponsors are another thing) by playing or even winning this tournament.

Tara or Heather would benefit a lot from the points. Especially Tara, as given her talent, making her play normal Junior events for a rankings boost is a waste of time and she needs to get them at places like this or Slams.

But I guess the LTA will make them play 16s so that they can boast about it to the media in case they win.

Sort of personal and don't answer if you don't want to, but do you know Amanda in real life? smile.gif If so, what's her game like?
Welcome to the forum, by the way.

As I dreaded... Tara and Heather in 16s.

Jessica and Joanna for 14s. No shock there.

The worst part is that now Tara won't be seeded to qualify at the USO unless she gets lucky. cry.gif

Jessica will be ones of the seeds between 9 and 12 (lots will be drawn).

They did the seeding in 16s based more on TE 16s ranking instead of ITF/WTA. doh.gif That means players who are about 15% as good as Tara get seeded, but she doesn't.

I wouldn't be too bothered about her not getting a seeding normally, but here she will play just two days after a long grass season and someone like Mladenovic or Orlik could be terrible. Hopefully she'll get one of the weak seeds and use the earlier rounds for warm up.

It's a joke that she's being made to play this, so I don't care if she loses first round.

Carreras will be a seed if two of the seeds withdraw.

Good to see them both get byes as they needed it badly to recover from jetlag, and in Tara's case, lack of hitting time on clay.

Thankfully Tara got a joke seed, so she should get some warm up there.
