Matthews second tournament (and his first medal!)

Just an update on my little 5 year olds tennis career!!

Played his second mini-red tournament last weekend and came second (out of 5). Really proud he was especially as he won a silver medal.

First 2 match's he won 10-2 (although one of the boys could hardly get a racquet on the ball). He then lost 10-8 to an older boy (Tom), before losing to an experienced player (Ben) 10-5.

They then played semi-finals where he beat Tom this time 7-2!!

So into the final against Ben and he had 5-5 before going down 7-5.

Really quite windy as well and to be honest he struggles to keep the ball in when he plays on the small size courts as he likes to whack it!!

If someone can tell me how to put a picture on here I have got a nice one with his opponent and their medals....All good fun...

How does the scoring work, surely that isn't 10-8 in games?

its part of the lta's new hard-line fitness strategy Josh....

even U5s have to play best of 5 sets in tourneys.....seagull was out there watching that final for 4 hours

Sheddie, stop teasing. It was surely a match tie-break, such as the juniors played in the Aberdeen Cup (and may play all the time for all I know!)

So the matches are over within 5 or 10 mins?

Yeah about 10 mins per match but then they go straight on and play another one... you know they are for 5-7 year olds right?

i like sheddie's idea, imagine they would have no probs later in life with long matches :)
4 miles only? i guess you went easy on him as he got the silver

seriously though you wonder if in such short matches nerves etc can have a big effect, can be a few points down till you even get a feel for the game with not much time to make a turn round.

Well done to little Matthew. Is it still nerve-wracking watching a 5 year old son play?

Not really although I have to stop myself from telling him to leave the ball when he insists on volleying it on the baseline!

Just about getting used to playing match's (where to stand etc) and being outside and having fun at this stage...If he keeps doing well then it may lead to him getting noticed by LTA but not too bothered about that at the moment

oh man its annoys me when my dubs partners do that!! one guy even did it on match point!!

when i played football as a kid my dad was crazy, he used to run up and down the side of pitch shouting at all the kids (not in a bad way mind) from both teams!

i hope you have him on a suitable fittness and nutrition scheme? no mcdonalds as a treat, no frosties for breakfast its shedded wheat and protein shakes all the way!

any update on that photo?

I've heard great things about Tom-the-older-boy so that's a really impressive semi-final victory. Did Matthew change his tactics between his first round match and semi-final (e.g. cut out the dodgy drop shots)?

It's a shame they made the semis and final shorter than the round-robin matches as I'm not sure Ben would have had the stamina to win a first-to-ten.
