Wimbledon round 1: Murray vs Santoro

So its the wily French veteran in his final year on tour, first up for Murray on Tuesday, probably on centre court

They've played just the once before, Murray winning 6-4, 6-2 in Paris last November on the way to the quarters

Santoro turns 36 this year and became a pro all the way back in 1989. He's managed to maintain a position just around the 50 mark....currently ranked 53 and was top 20 back in 2001

One of the most entertaining players to watch on tour and the only double-handed player off both sides I can think of in the top 100....He's got grass court pedigree having won Newport last year, serve-volleys most of the time. Never managed to win the Wimbledon doubles title but did pick up the Aussie Open crown twice

He still remains a very dangerous opponent on his day and has beaten Blake, Ljubicic and Youzhny this year. Lost in round 2 of Halle last week, 3&4 to Baghdatis

I will be very surprised - and very disappointed! - if Andy loses this one.

I really think Andy should win this in straight sets.

Santoro is very entertaining, but should certainly not have the game to be a real threat.

Santoro is a fine match up for Murray's game.

Ferrer, who has a similar style to Murray, beat Santoro for the loss of one game in Paris, and as they say, Santoro was lucky to get the one.

He can still potentially trouble the flashy players like Blake and Gonzalez, and the nutters like Berdych, but he has no chance at all against Murray.

This is of course the kiss of death, LOL ...

It should be a fun match but unless Murray is way below par there is no way he should lose it.

I guess this will almost surely be on Centre. A week or two ago, Santoro said that he wished a match on Centre as he has never played singles there and the officials said that they would try. And now he has an opponent who's very much worthy of CC!

Andy won 6-3 6-4 7-6 in a very entertaining and good-humoured match.

Nice start from Murray. Playing a good range of shots and looking relaxed out there.

Good encourgaing win with much good play and a few things to work on such as backhand put aways off a bouncing ball close to the net, and of course the overuse (?) of the dropshot.  Classic scream from Henman to hit the ball when he suspected Andy might go for a drop-shot in the tiebreak, which he did and got lucky. A good workout for Andy, and as anticipated very entertaining.

Good to see him really prepared to take on Santoro's second serve at times.  His returning is potentially one of his great weapos and I'd noticed that his return stats had dipped a bit since a year or so ago.

I actually thought it was quite good to see him have a real swing at Santoro's second serve on his second match point. McEnroe slightly criticised, saying he should have made Santoro play, but especially with Santoro the guy likes to play just a bit too much and doesn't make many unforced errors, So I thought it a good call by Andy there, just didn't quite execute.

Anyway, next point it was all over. Next stop, Malisse.
