Week 24 - ATP - Queen's Club, London (doubles)

Yay! disbelief.gif Strange as it may seem, Andy & his hitherto unknown Venezuelan partner, Daniel Vallverdu, have achieved the almost unthinkable by beating the arguably more established pairing of Richard Gasquet & Nicolas Mahut 4-6 7-5 [10-4].  Should've helped him get his eye for the match against Sébastien Grosjean tomorrow (?)...! clap.gif  wink

Never heard of Vallverdu but still well done to the lads.

Don't think anybody else has, either, DD!  The infuriating thing was that BBCi terminated coverage at the end of the Grosjean/de Voest match, i.e. just before Andy's match was due to start, to switch to bloody highlights of Euro football from eons ago! angered.gif  Shouldn't be allowed! furious

According to am.com, Vallverdu is an old pal of Andy's. They trained together in Spain, played junior doubles together, and also Daniel trains in Miami and Andy has played with him there.

The boys are back in action in the fifth match on the centre court tomorrow.  Let's hope BBCi sees fit to show some of it this time!  Interestingly, two of the other what might bge described as scratch pairings were dumped out in the first round today:  Rafa & Mariano Hood (ARG) (WC) lost 6-7(4) 5-7 to Gonzo (good day for him! cry) & Nicolás Lapentti (ECU), while the slightly more established pairing of NoDjo & Tipsy went out to the altenates drafted in to replace Clément & Grosjean, Rik de Voest & his fellow South African, Chris Haggard, 4-6 6-7(4), so at least Andy's getting a bit court time than Rafa & NoDjo! wink

Good to see Rafa making use of his doubles WC!!!

I'd be surprised if they beat Bjorkman/Ullyett, but I never thought they'd win the first match so who knows what they can do - and I guess this gives Murray some crucial court time as he's going to play in round 3 with 2 games played, while Gulbis/Seppi will have had 2 full matches

I wouldn't hold your breath for coverage stircrazy, as I left on Monday (at the very start of Andy's doubles - I had a train to catch) they were not only failing to show it on BBCi, but also covering up the cameras for overnight and thus not even filming it.

I didn't - & the Beeb didn't!  And Andy & Daniel have just lost to the third seeds (very remiss of me not to mention who their opponents would be last night! redface.gif ) 4 & 4 - but an hour & 10 minutes' extra court time for Andy! wink

Pretty respectable outing for Andy and his mate.
