RE: Wimbledon Juniors 2008.

Usually the junior grandslam winners get a qualifying WC the next year but the last 2 winners had a high enough ranking to get direct entry so that why they gave the MD WC.

Can't see why they wouldn't give Laura one. Surely being british should mean shes more likley to get a WC.

This Robson is good...

Great news to come home to and totally washes away my disappointments at Nadal winning Wimbly. clap.gif

I even managed to see a bit of the match as they showed the end of Laura's first set since it was in the middle of the women's and men's doubles finals. Hope she keeps her head straight (she will, I'm sure) and work hard as then she'll be top 100 quite soon ('soon' as in, in terms of women's tourneys played, not time).

Thought I'd bump this thread with a quick "HELL YEAH!!!" for Laura and add a few comments about the juniors I saw way back in the first round on the Saturday.

Matt James - Well done for winning the first set but he was a little outgunned by the enormous Polish fellow.

Johanna Konta - Clearly the better player against a little South African. The match was very much about Konta - the points were mostly won by Konta winners or Konta errors. What was interesting was that the "player's guests" bench contained three very vocal aussies who were egging her on with typically antipodian chants. I don't know how advanced her move to GBR is but on the strength of that support it would seem to be a little distant. It could just be that some folk from down under saw the "AUS" on the OOP and decided to lend their support.

Dan Evans - Up against the thai twelfth seed he was certainly not noticeably bettered in any department. He didn't look like he was playing out of his skin and managed to keep up with the higher ranked chappy quite nicely. I headed off to Henman Hill for the third set just as Evo took charge decisively so missed the end. He did rather amusingly manage to hit a second serve off the frame and clock the poor line judge noisily on the side of his head. There was also a very alert scoreboard girl who managed to dodge a few metaphorical bullets from Evo. Who'd be a match official while Dan Evans is playing!? There were also quite a few "team GB" players in the crowd - I spotted Goodall, Curtis, Cox and a couple of others I thought I recognised from pics but couldn't be sure who they were.

Tara Moore - This girl is mental! She was muttering and grimacing throughout the whole game I saw. For the first set (she lost) I didn't see a single first serve go in - OK I missed a few games at the start. At one point she tried to take a bite out of a tennis ball! In truth I don't think she looked like much of a grass courter - she was hitting balls over the net from the baseline powerfully with ease but without the incision necessary on grass. She also received serve waaay back behind the baseline. I think we'll see more from her on clay that on the green stuff.

It was a good day, if a little hot, and I even saw nice Mr Gilbert at the exorbitantly overpriced Dog and Fox the night before. I guess he can afford it though!

Thanks for all that, most of all for Tara's review. smile.gif She lists clay as her best surface, so it's all good.

And Konta herself said that she's becoming British, so there's no reason to think otherwise. These things can take some time - I kept hearing that Rumenov (also called Roumenov) had become a Spaniard but the ITF site listed him as Bulgarian for ages.

I watched the Konta match and thought she looked good. I think her application to become British is with the Home Office- I managed to overhear a conversation with someone "in the know" who was being less than discreet about some of our Girls..... and that is what he said

I was sitting right next to Tara Moore's coach and heard him mention Konta. I really wanted to ask him what the situation was but I was too shy. I'll never make a roving reporter!

Tara is a little weird in the way she plays her matches. Sometime it looks like she really cares about whats goin on then looks like shes thinking about everything but tennis and is a little laid back.

If she could get her head together and get a little bit more consistant she'd race up the senior rankings.
