Heather Watson vs. Coco Vandeweghe of the USA Johanna Konta vs. Laura Robson Naomi Broady vs. Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada
Daniel Smethurst vs. Matt Reid of Australia Neil Pauffley vs. Daniel Cox
That's a big ask for Heather against a 16 year old who has beaten Rezai and has taken a set off Cohen-Aloro this year. What's more, she allegedly possesses a serve that's already more devastating than most people in the top 100, so she must be effective on grass.
It's not fair that our two best Junior players this year (in terms of form) face off here. The only time they've met was in Italy this year, and Konta won a fairly close two setter. They have a lot in common, like we said last time - Australian connection, trains/trained at Bisham Abbey, have other international level sportspeople in their family etc. I don't know who will gain more from a victory! If Laura wins it, it'll be phenomenal, of course. But a Konta win will give her some chance of finishing the year as world number 1, which will be some achievement, too!
This is easy for Broady compared to last round, where she faced a player who has taken Jankvic to a tiebreaker this year on Carpet. Dabrowski is in good form, though - she won the G3 on grass in the US and although she's an LL, she's in the third round here.
Like I said before, Red's not to be taken lightly, but Smethurst can surely beat him.
Cox and Pauffley face off, unfortunately. Cox won against him a few days ago in the Wimbly qualies play off, so will be the favourite here. Again, I am indifferent about the result - Cox will do well to keep up the form, but Pauffers's Junior results are more relevant.
Saw Watson play in Eastbourne and I think she played the American already and won. Vandeweghe has a big serve but horrible forehand and movement on the grass was not that good. Watson has more than a chance.........
Heather won by 6-4 3-6 7-6(6). Realising her potential at last! La Robson beat Konta by 6-2 6-7(5) 7-6(5) This girl's improving by the hour, it seems! Broady won by 2 and 1.
Coxy plays Kontinen. Tough but winnable. Smethurst plays Jarmere Jenkins. Very winnable.
Heather has Oudin. Bad, very bad... La Robson and the Broadster face off.
Of all tyrannies a tyranny exercised for the good of its victim may be the most oppressive.... those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience
I seriously think that anyone living in London should go to this. It's for free, I think, and you'll not get tennis of this high level for free anywhere in Britain.
You'll get Oudin, Mladenovic, Kerkhove and Robson tomorrow. Unless I'm very mistaken, at least one of them will be top 50 within the next three years and at least three of them will be top 100.
It now shows how pathetic it was that she didn't get a Wimbly qualies WC. Would have never happened in other countries and shows why we're behind - we never encourage players to step up. Laura has an outside chance of getting a Wimbly main draw WC next year (I'm serious) or the year after that and a WC in qualies would have helped her a lot.
P.S. In case anyone's wondering why I haven't posted my customary rant at the LTA everytime Cox is made to play a pointless tourney and naturally underperforms, it's because I'm busy. It'll come on Friday, don't worry.
You have to be inconsistent at this age - one result means nothing. Look at Larcher De Brito, who's three times the player Laura is (at this moment) but loses weird matches even though she finds a way to win at Tour level. If she could have thumped Broady yesterday, she was definitely capable of beating her a few days ago.
Laura's not very young by international top Junior standards, mind it. You've got loads of players capable of winning against top 100 players at the age of 15. I'm not saying that she should do it, too - there's no hurry, of course. But it wouldn't hurt much to give her one according to me. Anyway, too late and hopefully she'll get one for the 75K if she wants it.
