RE: Weeks 26-27 - Wimbledon, London

Luczak isn't playing, and Dancevic was given a WC by the organisers beforehand

Andy Murray will be the 12th seed at Wimbledon.

In the 4th round he will be seeded to face either David Ferrer, Andy Roddick, David Nalbandian or Richard Gasquet.

Out of those 4.... I'm hoping he'll get Ferrer as he's the only one not comfortable on a grass court and so Murray should be able to beat easily.

That said, Gasquet is so out of form this season, he has a great record against Roddick, and although Nalbandian is a better grass courter, you never know when he's just not going to show any interest in a match.

Youzhny, Karlovic, Almagro, Hewitt, Ferrero, Verdasco, Robredo or Niemenen will be the seeded 3rd round opponent.... and out of those....only Hewitt would be a slight danger to Murray

Looks a lot better than it did when we were doing this analysis for Roland Garros - I'd be happy with any of those draws (barring Roddick and possibly Karlovic). Having said that, I'm expecting Andy to stumble long before the quarters.

Apparently Andy feels his seeding of no.12 a bit harsh, considering "I fell like I am one of the best grass court players in the world" and indicating that he has lost out unfairly by missing Wimbledon lat year.

I think that he is potentially a great player on grass, but on what evidence is he currently one of the best players in the world on grass or are the Wimbledon seeding folk meant to add in yet another criteria such as "potential", "maybes" or "Andy moan" factors ?

Currently, at least Wimbledon have a set statistical basis for adjusting points for their seedings, and as for Andy Roddick moaning as well,  about being behind Davydenko and Ferrer, well he would probably have had a chance if he wasn't absolutely miles bethind them both in unadjusted ranking points ( 835 and 625 respectively )

At least they do have criteria now rather than the "let's make them up" adjustments that they once did.

In practice anyway, it makes no real difference what seeding you have in the 9 - 12 range, so Andy M can just count himself lucky that he is not 13th and that Wawrinka has been "demoted" below him.

I think he could make a convincing case for being moved from 11 to 8.

Baggy's monster move is ludicrous imo and to say Berdych is a better grass court player than Murray is laughable.

However I think there are others who could convincingly argue the same thing...

No it isn't....

Murray's best result on grass is R16 of Wimbledon once and 1 Queen's QF

Berdych's best result on grass is QF of Wimbledon (and 1 other R16 appearance), 1 Halle title, and another final in Halle where he lost to Federer in 3 sets.

How does that record suggest that Murray is a better player on grass then Berdych?

(that said, I'd expect Murray to beat Berdych on a grass court, but the records of the two players suggest Berdych is the better player)

And moving Murray to 8th seed.... don't think that can be argued either, as Ferrer, Roddick, Nalbandian and Gasquet, the 5-8 seeds all have a record on grass that is equal to or better than Murray's, while Blake, Baghdatis and Berdych, the 9-11 seeds all have done better than Murray's done on a grass court.

There's no justification for moving Murray any higher than he is, as even though we may think he should be higher, he isn't ranked high enough, nor has a good enough grass court record to be seeded higher than them.

"I feel I am one of the top grass-court players but because I missed Wimbledon I'm going to lose out which I think is a little bit tough.

Nice of Murray to have some confidence, but of the 11 players seeded above him, I'd back him to beat Davydenko and Ferrer (both miles ahead on ranking points) and maybe Blake, Berdych and Baghdatis, but even if he was seeded above them, he wouldn't be in a better seedings group.

And if he is one of the top grass-courters.... then prove it by beating one of the 5-8 seeds and reach the QF's

Quite simply if draws and injuries were taken into account Murray IS top 5 on grass.

I also point you to your own sentence about who you/we would expect to win in a fully fit grass court h2h between Murray/Berdych and Murray/Baggy.

Andy is probably my least favourite of all the British players so this isn't favouritism. I happen to think its the truth. And I also happen to think Wimbledon are still within their rights to "help" the home players...

I've forgotten about his Nottingham QF and his Newport SF, but that doesn't really matter from the seedings as it's outside the period when they'd be added on anyway.

Yes, I'd expect Murray to beat Baghdatis or Berdych at the moment, but I'd also expect the 32rd LLodra to beat Davydenko on a grass court, so by the same logic should Llodra be the 4th seed.

Top 5 on grass?

Maybe... but I'd say Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Roddick are all definately better than him on grass, and I believe Gasquet and Nalbandian to be better grass court players as well, but he's in the top 8 (but hasn't produced the results yet to prove it)

Injuries and tough draws though are all part of the game, and I do think if he wasn't injured last year he'd have got enough points to be in the top 8 seedings, but he can't prove that as he could have got a Tsonga-like draw in the first round and lost and so gained no points.

And Wimbledon should help the home players as much as they can by giving them WC's, putting them on the show courts and the order when they want to play... but changing the seedings is a bit extreme...

If Blake got seeded 8th over Murray at the US Open, even if Murray was 8th and Blake 11th in the rankings I doubt we'd see that as acceptable and something the USTA are in their rights to do.

I'd say Murray is seeded within the group that he should be in (the 9-12 group) as the top 8 are 500 points at worst ahead of Murray, while Gasquet is 80 points ahead as well and has a far better grass court record than Murray has, so it wouldn't be right if he took the place of any of those 9.

And if Murray is that good on grass, he'll beat them anyway so it won't make a difference... it's not like he has to face any of the top 3 any earlier.

Really, I just don't see your evidence injuries or no injuries that Andy is top 5 on grass..

Wimbledon do actually have a system for taking grass court results in the last 2 years into account, which can lift folk up ( as long as they are they are within touching distance ranking points-wise, which is Roddick's problem ). Andy has not produced the results ( OK, he suffered injuries last year ), but it would be ludicrous to assume he might have got really good results and in some way allow for that, or even worse adjust seedings for a home player. Also, the idea that we adjust seedings for who many people might now expect him to beat is so subjective as to be not worthy of consideration.

No other slam tournament adjusts the seedings from the rankings at all, and to be fair to Andy he has evidently said he'd be OK with just using the rankings.

But if you are going to adjust for grass court, Andy is too far behing the top 8 pointswise. has no case whatever to be ahead of Gasquet, and Baghdatis and Berdych have Wimbledon results and / or grass court title to their names.

I think no.12 seeding is where he deserves to be, and since there is NO WAY he deserves top 8, then it doesn't really matter where he is in 9 - 12.

All that said, I think he has great potential on grass, I do agree he would be favourite to beat a few seeded above him, and I can see the possibilities of reaching the quater finals ) although i wouldn't bet on it ) and then if he is drawn to meet whoever comes through Davydenko's part of the draw ( who will almost certainly not be Davydenko ! ) who knows ?

Best of luck to Andy, may his deeds match his words.
