Apologies for anyone who's on this thread for the tennis, but I'm back to geography!

Liverpool has been part of Lancashire since the counties were recognised centuries back, hence my comment about the cricket. Lancashire move their home matches about - Old Trafford in Manchester, Aigburth in Liverpool, Blackpool and, occasionally, Southport. Tennis recognises Liverpool as part of Lancashire, and so do rugby and amateur boxing - and all other sports, probably.
Merseyside is a concept - it's really to allow guys from Birkenhead to pretend that they're not really from Cheshire; Johnylah will almost certainly speak scouse rather than Winsfordian! It's also useful for the years when Everton and Everton reserves (sorry, Liverpool) reach Wembley, so we can all pretend to be friends and chant 'Merseyside' in unison!
The idea that government re-organisation can actually move a city from one county to another is a nonsense; after all, another government ten years down the line is very likely to move it back again - I'm old enough to remember these happenings!! Suggesting that Liverpool isn't in Lancashire any more is tantamount to saying that Warrington is in Cheshire - which, technically, it is, but I suspect Gareth and all other Wire would be dismayed to hear that Lancastrians disown them, the way he's trying to disown us Scousers. And I speak with several hats on, here, having been born and spent my infant years in Knotty Ash, before moving over the border into Huyton and going to school in Prescot. Being well brought up, I support Everton, Liverpool City (rugby league, before they went defunct, so switching my allegiance to St Helens), and Lancashire County Cricket Club.
