The 6ft 2 teenager had showed tremendous determination to come back from 3-0 in the third set the previous day during a tense semi final win over Shane Vinsant (USA) was equally impressive in the final. Unruffled despite losing a close first set, Morgan was the better player in the second set and full of confidence, raced to victory in the third set.
Head of Mens Tennis Paul Hutchins was court side to watch the final; It was very pleasing to see a British winner in the Orange Bowl and George fully deserved his win against a very quick and agile opponent. It is a positive step forward for other players to realise we are able to win at this level and will help to raise the standards. After a successful Florida tour it was a tribute to Leon Smith Colin Beecher and Iain Hughes who were coaching and managing the boys in the 12s and 14s. We look forward to continuing the great relationship we have with the HPCs at Nottingham and Loughborough under martin weston where George is based.
Leon Smith, Head of the 16 & under boys added; " This is a great achievement for George and will act as a springboard for 2008. George has worked hard and competed well all year and this is a great way to end what has been very successful year. Winning the Orange Bowl is always a good achievement in junior tennis and will give George the belief that he can win on the international stage."
Morgan, who is coached by Martin Weston at Loughborough and Nottingham Tennis Centre has dominated the domestic scene in 2007 winning the 14 & under national championships in both singles and doubles in August and the 14 & under Masters event earlier in the year.
