AMS Paris: Q/F - Murray v Gasquet

Damn Damn Damn Damn!

Just as i thought really! I really do feel that Andy doesnt really know how to play Gasquet. His tactics look confused. First set he didnt really know what to do. Ok he won the second but really it was down to gasquets incompetence! Andy held brilliantly for 2-1 final set, but at 2-2 played a shocking game! it was such a shame. However when gasquet started playing properly again, Andy looked like he wasnt confident. Either he doesnt know how to play Gasquet or he isnt confident of beating him. im gutted!

If Nadal puts out Baggy and Gasquet downs Nalby, I think that leaves Andy in 10th. How many alternates do they take? Unlikely scenario but you never know and Roddick could drop out but bet he won't even if he was severely hampered.

Devastated.  That match was seriously bad for my health.

What's this people keep saying about Gasquet being mentally flaky? I've only seen him play 3 times and he has shown no sign of it then, drat him.

Ah well, next year. It is really quite incredible that Andy came so close this year in view of the injury timeout.

Bah! Why does he never win when I see him Live??

Anyways, some good tennis from him and it was a great few weeks at the end. So long, 2007.

I really do think Roddick should just concentrate on the Davis Cup Final and not get distracted by going to Shanghai

And Davy- donkey just needs a break from tennis, rather than embarass himself any more..

Couldn't agree more! Davydenko is obviously exhausted but who's going to turn down those possible points and that money?

i know its a great effort by Andy but it worries me a little. Whenever Andy plays Baggy, Gasquet, Djokovic (people his generation, his peers) he seems to lack something. Its as if they take a little of his confidence away. When Andy plays Nadal, or Fed he plays way better....(although i suppose Nadal is his generation!)

If you look at the losses....
Baggy at wimbledon
Djoko at 2 masters semis
Gasquet at 2 masters
Monfils at french

He has to start beating these guys soon or the pattern may continue. What do u guys think?

Only just brought myself round to posting. I'm so disappointed cry I really thought after that second set he might do it. The sloppy game he played did for him, boosted Gasquet's confidence and with the crowd finally getting fully behind him he made the most of it. Perhaps someone will drop out of the Shanghai tournament. weirdface

Well, I'd pretty much discount the 2 masters series semis against Djokovic.  He arguably shouldn't of played either of them.

Not sure there is a particularly serious issue with Gasquet either.  Tonight's match could have gone either way, and from memory he just played a bit of a shocker in previous match.

I don't think there is really the generational problem you suggest. Your sample is rather small and I think it's just how things have worked out.

I suppose youre right, theres no real need to worry! But i feel more confident about Andy playing Nadal and Federer or Roddick than i do when he plays the "kids!"

I agree with Iain. And he was injured against Monfils at RG.

One good thing - his fitness has definitely improved. He didn't lose because of tiredness - at least it didn't seem so to me - despite having played 5 weeks in a row, getting to the final in two of them. That's a lot of tennis on the trot.

Very disappointed but like others have said it's good that he got so close to the Masters with the year he's had. More annoyed as it really felt like he threw it away rather than Gasquet won it.

i think Murray played well. Ok the second set was Gasquet's fault rather than Murray's agressiveness. but Murray knew he had to be aggressive after losing the 1st set. In the first set, it was evenly poised until Murray played some drop shots which were easily retrieved by Gasquet. However, in the final set, Murray was more relaxed after losing his serve, they both appeared tense, but when Gasquet had match point, i thought something was going to turn it around for murray. Gasquet did not disappoint me in this match, he knew his big serves would count on him in these high pressure matches. For Murray, i dont think anyone should be annoyed with him, because he been on a fabulous run and we thought he had no chance after getting to Shanghai because of his 3 months out with injury. He's pleased to get that far so should we.

Also, he is able to beat Djokovic, Baghdatis, Gasquet and Nadal. His matches against Djokovic should not have happened because he played through injury. When he plays him again, he will be fit and ready. His defeat against Baghdatis was not the Murray we knew, because he was probably under pressure after winning that fantastic match against Roddick. He played very well against Nadal on both occasions. Against Gasquet, he knows how to play him and that is through aggressiveness. the first set was abit passive from Murray because he did not know when to go for the killing shot.

Overall, hes improving and hopefully with a fitter murray next year, he will be able to gaining those all important points in the Summer to maintain his assault for his projected top 5 place!
