This will be the first time they've played since Murray's 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win over Stepanek at Wimbledon 2005. The Czech has been as high as no 8 but is now down at 35.
Stepanek made the Moscow quarters last week before losing to Tipsarevic in 3...he impressively took out Tursunov though. His form in the 2nd half of 2007 has been really good, he was on the verge of slipping out of the top 100 but is now back after winning ATP Los Angeles, making the semis of TMS Montreal (beating Gonzalez, Haas, Davydenko), pushing Djokovic to a final set tiebreak in the US Open and beating Wawrinka in the Davis Cup.
The ball really flies through the air in Madrid, courts are very fast and high bouncing which will suit a serve-volleyer like Stepanek....it's a tricky match for Murray but I'd back him to get through as he likes facing serve-volleyers who rely on placement rather than power on the serve being one of the best readers of serve in the game.
If he gets through, decent chance to make rd3 and defend last year's pts with Chela awaiting in rd2
Tough matches, that must be just about the nastiest first round opponent he could have drawn. Chela is in form at the moment, too. And if he does get through Hotlips and Chela, then Baggy or Nadal awaits in the third. . .
LMAO... I didn't know you had something for Stepanek, Mad
Chela had that great run to the quarters of the US Open, only played 1 tournament since though...losing to Djokovic in the quarters of Vienna last week. He's not the most comfortable indoors so I'd put Andy as favourite
I watched the match on Masters Series TV. I couldn't post, as to do so I have to come out of the livestream and it takes forever to get back in.
Andy was magnificent! Getting practically everything back, being aggressive when needed. Steps was not playing really badly, but Andy had the answer to practically everything he did; don't let anybody complain about the break points not taken for Andy, it was just that the opponent came up with something good to save them.
I had been quite worried about that match. Oh me of little faith.
Play like that against Chela, Andy, and you will win it.
Great win for Andy. I had to follow it via the live scoreboard but it seemed as though everything went to plan. Rumour has it that Rafa might not be fully fit. His tendonitis is giving him some trouble. I expect we'll see when he takes on Marcos.
