Konta proves one to watch for British fans

From LTA site....news will certainly please Arka who noticed this possiblity last month !

Tennis, in common with so many other sports these days, can be something of an international puzzle and rarely have things been so confusing as the first round confrontation between Tara Moore and Johanna Konta in the US Open girls singles.

Though Moore was born in Hong Kong and is currently based in Florida at Nick Bollettieris Tennis Academy she was playing under the Great Britain banner. In contrast Konta, the 16-year-old daughter of two Hungarians, is still officially playing as an Australian after being born in Sydney but hopes to be granted British citizenship in the next few weeks and sees her future as very much part of the national scene.

And it was the distinctly promising Konta, a member of the Win Tennis Academy based at Bisham Abbey, who came out victorious, winning her first ever main draw match in a Grand Slam event 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.

I cant wait to become properly British and that should be very soon, said Konta, coached here in New York by former British Davis Cup player and world junior No.1 Martin Lee. My family and I decided Europe was definitely the place to be for tennis and I am very settled in Britain. I am very excited about the future.

Konta initially moved to Barcelona and worked at the academy run by Sergio Casal and Emilio Sanchez where Andy Murray honed his game for two years. Her parents were working in London, her father in hotel management and her mother a dentist, so she first joined the Sutton Academy and then moved to Bisham Abbey under the training scheme led by Mike Walker earlier this year.

Although she has won titles in Finland, Spain and South Africa this year, Konta was initially beset by nerves in the opening set as Moore dominated from her baseline. Her only previous experience of this flight of junior tennis was losing in the first round of qualifying at Wimbledon but fortunes changed dramatically in the second.

Using her superior athleticism, a strong serve and some forceful groundstokes, Konta began to dominate and Brown could offer little resistance with the much taller girl breaking serve three times to level the match. Another break early in the deciding set seemed to herald victory but once again anxiety became an issue.

Breaks abounded with Konta scoring the most important to lead 5-3 but just as she was about to serve for the match, Moore called for an injury time-out as she sought the attentions of the trainer. Sitting in her courtside chair, Konta had much on which to ponder and her worst fears seemed set to come to fruition as Moore three times moved to break point.

However, Konta stayed calm and resolute before a strong kicking service winner gave her match point and she sealed the victory with a strong backhand.

Great to hear that we'll have another top British junior to follow from next year w00t.gif Been a good season for getting foreign juniors with Katharina Brown becoming British earlier in the year.

Cancels out the retirements from further up the ladder

Good to hear. She'll be our junior #1, good to give Tara a challenge.
