Sportastic Grade 1 ITF Austria

Willis & Pauffley will be going out to cause some damage in the draw this week on the clay in Linz, both are in the main draw & given kind openers will look to rack up some points in there quest for making the US Open. After last weeks doubles which they lost after having 4 match points in the 2nd set they know they are capable of winning grade 1 events!!! Also watch out or George Coupland at Frinton he has a wild card in to the main draw & is coming in off the back of reaching the quarters of the doubles at Wimbledon, where he didn't lose serve the whole tournment, taking out some great scalps along the way.!!!

Pauffley has recovered from the throat infection that affected him in last weeks German open & is ready for action!! Had a bit of a sore back but is over that now too, I think he can go deep in the draw given a nice 1st match!! Willis is Willis & will scrap for his points, mixing up the play on the Austrian dirt, I think they can win the doubles!! Matt Short is also out there playing qualies, not sure how he will do but would be good to have another Brit in the draw.

Unfortunately the entry deadline is very near (3rd August), so the only way one of them can make the main draw as a direct entrant is by winning both the titles out here. cry.gif

But they could get a good seeding in the qualies if they do well here and play three or four more events before the USO.

Willis & Pauffley are both aware that it will be a big ask to be DA for US Open so are looking at qualies, with the hope that they sneak in to MD. Although both boys are abit more laid back about this years US Open, they are both planning on being DA for all the slams next year. Apparently weather is 35-37c in Linz & the balls are flying...expect Willis to have a good run & Pauffley to hit through people. ......we hope!!!!!!

Matthew James has qualified for the main draw in what has to be the worlds weakest G1 qualifiers, he beat an Austrian guy 0 & 0 and will take his deserved place in the main draw behind Pauffley & Willis. Steph Cornish has ben moved up to main draw from qualies so we has Jos Rae & Steph in the main this week.

Ah, you mean Matthew Short? For a moment I thought that James had withdrawn from Winchester and went to Austria!

Willis plays 11th seed Xander Spong of Holland , Pauffley plays 16th seed Klempa of Slovakia, Short plays Gigounon of Belgium , Tough draws for the boys but winnable & if they get through them the draw is quite nice for a couple of rounds.
Girls - Cornish plays a girl aound 120 so 100 places highier, Rae has a nice draw & plays an Italian around the same ranking, Tara Moore has a bye.

Willis lost to Spong earlier this year, but he can beat him this time. Klempa has a ranking that's badly inflated with points from Africa and East Europe, although he seems very comfortable on clay. I think that both have a chance of winning.

Gigounon is a bad draw for Short, though. cry.gif

Thanks for the draws!
