Monte Carlo Masters - Murray v Gicquel W.O

Aaarrrggghhhh!

According to the livescore site I prefer, Andy plays tomorrow first up at 10 am local time.

Andy doesn't DO mornings!

Looking at that... he does appear to be on first, but all the matches start at the same time, and there doesnt appear to be any kind of pattern to try and explain who plays on what court

Still... Giquel on clay shouldn't be too difficult, even though Murray will probably need 3 sets to get the win

Ooops, I just realised they have put all the matches as on first! Panic over.

I assume that it has been decided who will play tomorrow, but not when!

I started posting my mistake before I saw yours forever delayed.

Yes, I just panicked!

Is Gicquel not a good clay player? I don't know much about him but I would have thought all the French could put up a good show on the surface.

As long as they don't put Andy on before he has time to wake up!

He's probably decent on clay, but no more than that really. His biggest weapon is the fact he has a good serve from what I've seen of him, and clay will neuter that, so I don't think he'll be that effective

He did manage to manage to lose sets to 0 and 1 against an injured Kiefer at Roland Garros last year, and despite Kiefer not being able to run, still managed to lose to the guy... so that probably tells us that clay isnt his best surface

BBC are reporting that Andy had to withdraw from doubles with Jamie due to a back injury, and that he could be a doubt for the singles tomorrow. Not particularly good news...

quote from andy on am.com

I hit a shot and my back went into spasm. It got worse and worse after every game so now I just have to see what its like tomorrow.

im no medical expert but if it was a back spasm then it shouldnt be that serious or am I just an idiot smile

He got to R2 of Roland Garros last year (beat Di Mauro and lost to Kiefer 11-9 in the 5th set). Other than that he made the QF of Amersfoort, losing to Djokovic.

That is dreadful news.  I left the house just as they had lost the first set tiebreak, so have only just found out about the injury.

I thought he had a really good chance of consolidating his top ten ranking in this tournament. Also he had a heavy schedule in the next few weeks, I wonder how long he will be out. Although I would rather he stayed out until it was properly sorted than play when he is under par and get hammered by somebody like he was by Djokovic.

Andy has now officially withdrawn.  Thank goodness for that, he has a long career ahead of him, it would be plain silly to compromise that for a possible short-term gain.
