Useful for Murray but I'm not for gloating - damn shame for Roddick and leaves his DC participation in doubt against Spain. I was also looking forward to a good match and Murray was shaping up to give us one.
Andy Roddick's retirement after 8 games gave Andy Murray passage into the semi-finals in Miami. Roddick took a lengthy injury time out to be assessed by the trainer then returned to court to serve with Murray leading 4-3. His movement clearly restricted, Roddick tried to end the points as quickly as possible, but a horror smash into the net, followed by a forehand long, soon put him in trouble and despite saving one break point with a huge serve, he struggled to reached Andy Murray's forehand pass, presenting Murray with an easy put away to break for 5-3. At which point Andy Roddick conceded the match.
Murray had started brightly, an aggressive forehand down the line for a winner, then a winning volley and a forehand crosscourt to hold to 15. Mixing up his serves, his first groundstroke was far more aggressive than usual, allowing him to dictate the play, often ending points with comfortable volleys at the net.
Murray punished a second serve with a backhand return winner then put away a winning volley to create the first break point of the match. Roddick saved it and another with big serves denying Murray any opportunity. Both players held comfortably from then on, Roddick through heavy serving, Murray's forehand hit with real purpose, until Roddick's injury timeout.
Even in the short time they were on court, it was clear to see that this was an aggressive Murray, looking to dominate the points, especially in his own service games, rather than relying on mistakes from his opponent.
Unfortunately, Roddick's injury ended what could well have been a special match. But Murray has the chance to show the same intent in the semi final.

What are you playing as in the pick em game, scoobs?
I've contrived to not get myself included, which is a shame because it looks like you guys need the help
On the subject of Roddick's injury - I'm not making this up - as he lunged for a volley he felt "something in my butt go" and it became painful. He went off court and had a "butt massage" but it actually seemed to make it worse. So he retired with a butt-ache. Or lower gluteal discomfort, if you prefer.
It's a shame as Andy seemed to be playing well prior to Roddick's injury as well, so it looked like it was going to be a cracking match (from what I could see, I was watching it on the computer and watching the football on the tele). It was a shame to see Roddick retire - a bit of an anti-climax and hopefully he's not too crocked and will have to miss the DC.
Anyway - semi-finals of back to back AMS events can only be a good thing plus he has plenty in the tank for Friday.
