15-0, 15-15, 4th double fault 15-30, 5th double fault 15-40 nooooooooo 30-40, 40-40, both set points saved! Adv Hampton, another SP. Hampton takes the second set 6-4
"There was only one third set in Wednesday's eight matches, and it wasn't completed. Jamie Hampton of Alabama moved into the semifinals when No. 2 seed Naomi Cavaday of Great Britain retired, giving Hampton a 3-6, 6-4, 2-1 victory. Cavaday, suffering from a fever prior to the match, decided to take the court, and outhit Hampton in the first set. But in the second, Hampton began to get her all-court game on track, took an early lead and held on to force a third."
I hope Naomi gets better soon and is ok for Alabama next week, she must be gutted at the moment.
Naomi Cavaday's hopes of winning this week's Luxilon Cup in Miami and therefore winning a wildcard into next year's main draw were scuppered by a high fever which left her totally drained.
Doctors didn't want her to play her quarter-final match against American Jamie Hampton as the extreme heat rule was in place with humidity levels of 100 degrees. However, Naomi decided to have a go and it looked like a remarkable victory might be on the cards when she took the first set 6-3, outplaying her opponent. However, Hampton took advantage of an ailing Cavaday to edge the 2nd 6-4 and Naomi decided she was just unable to continue at 2-1 down in the 3rd.
Speaking afterwards Naomi told this site "I'm really dissapointed that I couldn't complete the match today but I have had a virus for the last week which really affected me and forced me to retire. I went to see the doctor the day before to get checked out as I was feeling horrible with a bad cough and head cold. They told me that I had a temperature of 102 degrees, which is way above the normal 98, and if it didn't go down to below 100 it wouldn't be safe to play. I was frustrated that I was sick but I knew that tomorrow was a new day and maybe my temperature would drop. I was relieved to hear that it had until I found out that it was now only 101 !! I got some accupuncture and accupressure which I was told should help with my fever, I was a little sceptical but it worked as it dropped below 100."
"I walked onto court knowing it was going to be an incredibly tough match as I was fighting my opponent and my body. I was struggling with my breathing but found a way to come from behind and win the first set 63. Towards the end of the second set I began to feel dizzy but I was still hoping I could close it out. I didn't have enough to come through and she forced it to a 3rd set. I was really struggling at this point and in the 3rd game I was feeling so bad I felt I had no choice but to retire. I am dissapointed but I am now focusing on resting up in preparation for the next couple of tournaments on the clay and Fed Cup in a few weeks."
