Some US Articles on Andy

The tennis guys in the American media are liking Andy a lot at the moment. Some pretty nice stuff. He's obviously always been pretty popular in the US so the high opinions are maybe not that surprising but there's some nice stuff getting flung in his direction and some nice comparisons.

The expert opinion on Murray is as much a hope as anything else. It's a hope that his brand of tennis -- patient, thoughtful, interesting -- can succeed against those blistering attacks. Few players have the capacity to surprise a veteran tennis viewer -- Federer and John McEnore come to mind --but Murray is one of them. He controls points with variety rather than power. He can rally passively, then spring a trap with a running forehand pass. He has the speed and court sense to sneak into net in the middle of a point, and the hands to be effective there.

"He looks the second best player right now," said FOXSports commentator Jimmy Arias. "I could see him taking the No. 2 ranking in the future and being Federer's main challenger."

Murray, meanwhile, is a big part of tennis's future. Slower surfaces give players fractions of a second more to react, and the stable frames and larger sweet spots of modern rackets have helped players redirect fast-moving balls, i.e., hit returns, more than club stationary ones (serve). If Roger Federer is the ultimate adaptation to these two influences of technology, Murray might be the next best thing.

In San Jose, he was forced to scrape his way through a few tough early-round matches and then against Roddick and Karlovic – who served 26 aces and may have played the best match of his life – his level went way up. Who else could launch a gravity-defying lob over a 6-foot-10 inch giant in the tiebreak and break his will? Probably only Federer, and maybe Rafael Nadal.

Great to hear that good stuff being said. I am very confident Andy will be number 2 or 3 by the end of the year.

Its still early days if Andy going to be top 5 by the year end! I think he will definitely has a shout in the ATP Race, but for hime to be top 5 in the world he has to be consistent as he is now. The problem is he has got points to defend in the 2nd half which is tough, but if he continues to play great tennis till Wimbledon then top 5 could be reachable. Though i doubt it because hes got to do something BIG in the Slams to get there. Look at Henman in 2004, he reached 2 Slam semis and made top 5! If Henman can do it, then Murray can but its going to be tough for him

The problem with US articles is that they are always liable to refer to Andy as English even if they start by calling him a Scot

It is great to see Andy spoken off in such glowing terms but he has to win something bigger than San Jose before you can say he is the 2nd best player on the planet. I think he will get there but too often he plays passively and loses the point passively. I think there is still a long way to go and I just want to enjoy the ride.

Just my opinion. Everyone always seems to accuse me of being mad, but in my opinion if Murray doesn't make world number 1 within 3 years max, I will be shocked.

Number 2 or 3 in the world by the end of the year.

Second best player in the world right now.

I don't think you to be mad and I think that Andy will be number 1 by 2009.

But then again it's common knowledge that I'm mad.

Andy has lots of oppurtunities to improve his ranking over the next few months as he has almost nothing to defend. The first 5 masters series events of the year and the French open are all mandatory events and last year he had four first round and two second round exits. By Wimbledon he could be knocking on the top 5.

Well, quite obviously I AM Mad!

I hope Andy will reach top 5 or higher eventually, but it cannot be a "done deal". Too many things could intervene - injury, new young players coming along, etc.

(They don't call me "Mrs Pessimism" for nothing)

The good thing about being a pessimist is that you are never disappointed!
