I think it's more than possible that someone from the ATP rang de Villiers late at night his time in a panic and asked what he should do, giving de Villiers the impression that the situation wasn't covered by the rules at all, de Villiers said what he thought would be fairest (and in my opinion, Blake going through would have been fairest had there been no rule) and only found out the next morning that it was covered by the rules after all. Funny as the U-turn is, I think he deserves some credit for not trying to brazen out the error.
