Aussie Open scores and chat: day 2

Apart from the British matches, some intriguing clashes will take place over the next 12 hours.

The pick of them is probably James Blake v Carlos Moya (I wish the Beeb were showing that after Murray instead of the Hewitt match which will probably be an easy straights win for Hewitt). It'll be an interesting one, both are on-form and reached the ATP Sydney final last week (Blake won 6-3, 5-7, 6-1) and Moya knocked out Baghdatis and Gasquet along the way. Moya leads the head-to-heads 5-4 but Blake has won the last 3 matches, aswell as in Sydney he won 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 on the clay of TMS Hamburg in 2006 and 6-4, 7-6[6], 2-6, 6-3 in rd3 of the US Open later in the year.

Hingis also gets her campaign underway, Nathalie Dechy shouldn't pose too many problems. Sharapova, Cljisters and Ana Ivanovic look sure to give their opponents heavy beatings.

Guccione v Rochus will be interesting, who have people picked for that one ? I reckon Guccione will come through in 4, Rochus has the better baseline game but over the last fortnight, the Guccione serve has been red hot and I don't think the Belgian will be able to have much impact on it.

Hopefully Nalbandian doesn't come through his match against Tipsarevic and then Alan Mackin will have a better chance of making the 3rd round.

Nadal-Kendrick (2) is 3rd on the Rod Laver Arena. I reckon Nadal in straight sets, Kendrick surely can't serve as well as he did at Wimbledon a 2nd time against Nadal.

It seems likely that the winner of Blake v Moya will have a very good chance of getting to at least the QFs, so I agree, that's the match of the day. It may have a long-term effect on the pick 'em competition too, if we're split on who we've gone for in that match.

I've also got a lot riding on Guccione beating Rochus, which the bookies don't seem to expect (and I know Ollie is some peoples' pick for the dark horse of the competition), but I think he can do it if he can take the pressure.

Having said that, Guccione has only won 10% of his return games this year and Rochus is a very good returner, so if he breaks Guccione, it's hard to see the Aussie breaking back. Guccione probably has to make sure he gets into tiebreaks if he wants to win the match.

I too think Rafa will put Kendrick away in straights, but then again, freak-boy has been a bit wobbly recently ...

No shocks at the moment except Mackin is down a set, and Nalby in a first set tiebreak, he was 4-1 up but now 5-5 all.

Nalby just lost the first set on a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-5) to Tipsy.

Sharapova in a decider against Pin Tipsy is serving for a 2-0 lead against Nalby, 5-4...40-15...2 SPs...and takes the 2nd set 6-4, Tipsy leads 7-6 6-4! And Mirza is safely through to the 2nd rd in 2 tight sets.

Come on Mackin hang in there....

Sharapova won the final set 9-7.

There was a retirement in the Nalby match, but it was Tipsy, not Bandy (!) at 2-1 down in the 5th. What an escape for the Argentinian!

Rochus beat Guccione 9-7 in the 5th.

Play then stopped on the outside courts as the Extreme Heat Policy was triggered (that's the Aussie equivalent of rain at Wimbledon ) but has continued on the two covered courts.

Rafa had a tight 1st set against Kendrick but eventually won in straights.

Kim Clijsters double bagelled Bardina and Hingis beat Déchy 0 & 2.

Andy's match has been moved up from MCA to the Vodafone arena (somehow, the BBC really seem to be managing to call the shots here!) but it won't be played until Blake-Moya has finished. That match has just started (about 07.15 GMT) and could be a long one. If it's short, Andy may get on court around 09.00 GMT, but I wouldn't bank on it!

Hewitt and Russell should both be shot. They're both wearing bright pink shirts. Russell prehaps deserves to be shot first as his shirt is sleeveless.

Hewitt 5-2 down in the first set! Verdasco and Mathieu match just started on the Vodafone Arena, who do you want to win and play against Murray? im not bothered which player, i dont think Verdasco the player he once was went he made the USO QF in 2005 and Mathieu can produce great tennis but is inconsistent, though his backhand is his stongest weapon. Davydenko leading comfortably with a break in the third set.

Nieminen hit back to take the second 6-2 and its 2-all in the third. Hewitt lost the first 6-3 to unheralded or a veteran Micheal Russell of USA

Well well. Lazarus Lleyton beats Muscles Russell in 5.

I was only going to watch part of that match when Andy's finished early, but I got involved and stayed until the bitter end. Guess I'd better get off this computer and get on with the chores. . .
