Night Johnnylad.

Can understand the need for bed, but I'm in training! Tomorrow night could be a very long one. That said, I've got a very, very nice bottle of whisky lined up for what will be Tuesday A!M!

Tsonga now 5-2 up in second set, I'm here for the duration of this one!

My "will I, won't I" debate about signing up for the Eurosport web coverage lasted an hour and a half!

Now 5-5.

Tsonga looked like he gave up on that game.

Roddick takes tiebreak 7-2

Tsonga fell apart. Signs of a reason we haven't heard much about this guy. He has a good game, but maybe the mind isn't there.

Andy Roddick seems to now be in control against Tsonga (6-7, 7-6, 6-3), so I'm off to bed.

A quick rundown on action in the last 4 hours - Duckboy won in the end, by the way.

Biggest shock I can see is young American Sam Querrey coming back from a set down to beat Acasuso in 4. I'd usually be celebrating an Argentinian loss, but I had 'suso reaching the last 16 in the prediction comp.

Similarly, Zack Fleishman (who?!), another young American, has beaten another Argentinian seed, Calleri.

Bjorkman-Patience is a bit crazy - Patience took the first two sets, Bjorkman has won the next two 0 & 1!

Alun Jones gave the Aussies something to shout about as he went 2 sets up against Marc Gicquel, but the Frenchman snuffed out his hopes by waking up and taking the last three sets 4, 1 & 0.

Melzer beat Karlovic in straights, but I predicted Melzer to win anyway so that didn't surprise me too much.

Sela thrashed Srichaphan, which surprised me - I thought it would be close.

Potential shocks - Fish has just made it 1-1 with Ljubo and Chunder-nelli has just taken the 2nd set off Thomas Johansson too. Off course, the latter won't be a shock ...

Pim-Pim had to retire after just two games against Garcia-Lopez. Very sad after his problems of the last year or so.

Nothing very exciting in the women's singles - no. 25 seed Medina Garrigues is the only seeded play to lose so far. A few seeds have 'only' won 2-1 though!

Eek! Chunder-nelli has kust taken the 3rd set off ToJo 6-1 to lead 2-1. He's got to find a way to choke this away, surely!

Fishy has just taken a 2-1 lead against Ljubo too.  Could this be the fish that got away?

The big news on day 1 is happening on court 1 right now....it looks like 4th seed Ivan Ljubicic is going to go out in rd1 !!! This will be a massive shock with Ljubo being one of the on-form guys going into the AO.

He took the first set 6-4 v Mardy Fish but Fish hit back, won the 2nd 7-2 in the tiebreak, took the 3rd 6-4 and is currently serving for the match in the 4th !!!!

Fish serving for the match:

15-0

30-0

40-0

GSM Fish !

Wow, so Ljubicic crashes out 4-6, 7-6[2], 6-4, 6-4

That's happened so many times in the last few years for Ljubo. He's done really well in Doha, then come to Melbourne as a dark horse and lost early on

Tojo has hit back and taken the 4th set 6-4. On serve early in the 5th. I back Tojo to come through this with his experience and Chiudinelli's reputation !
