Good news in Tim world so far today:

Verdasco goes out ahead of him, as you'll already know

Clement goes out behind, so that's another ranking place saved.

Mirnyi also goes out.

Ginepri advances. He's now 2 games away from overtaking.

Wawrinka is 2 sets up against Capdeville - seems to be making short work of him come on Paul! fight.  If Wawrinka wins, that's Tim down another place

Grosjean and Rochus are into the fifth set at 2-2. C'mon Olly!

Mayer's  match has just started.

Wawrinka  wins. Tim's down another place to WR36 (good news for Alex, though)

Rochus 4* - 5 Grosjean in the fifth set.

Mayer's a break up against Seppi

Grosjean wins and advances. 2 more wins and he'll overtake.

Mayer's been broken back, and Seppi's broken again to serve for the set.

Mayer  won in four in the end. He'll overtake if he makes the semis.

OK, time for a "What if" post:

Tim started the week at WR38, on 900 points.

He's defending 5 points from last year and gets a "0 points" for withdrawing this year, leaving him at 895 points.

As lots of people are defending from last year, he rose six places as the week began to WR32

Since then, Verdasco, Fish, Wawrinka and Rochus have overtaken him, so he's currently sitting at WR36 up 2 places.

Behind him, there are 10 playersleft in the draw. All are threats, but a maximum of seven can actually overtake:

Best Case: WR36 (up 2). Worst Case WR43 (down 5)

Chela  "just" needs to beat Andy on Saturday.

Grosjean needs to get past Nalby and then Haas or Mayer, and get to the QF.

Ginepri needs to get past Blake, and then Hewitt or Gonzo, and get to the QF.

Mayer needs to get past Haas, then Grosjean or Nalby, then the winner from Davydenko's segment to get to the SF.

Monfils needs to get past Gasquet, Querry or Robredo, and the winner from Federer's segment to get to the SF.

Kohlschreiber needs to get past Nadal today, then Wawrinka, Chela or Murray, then the winner from Blake's segment to get to the SF.

Santoro needs to get past Davydenko, Berdych or Tursunov, then the winner from Nalby's segment to get to the SF.

Udomchoke, Arthurs and Querrey needs to get to the final, past the whole of Federer's half of the draw.

I'd say the chances of Tim's ranking being up or unchanged are pretty good.

With Kohlschriber going out to Nadal, that's a maximum of six that can overtake from 9, and a worst case of 42 (down 4)

Fish rises off the top of the table.

Monfils  goes out, as do Udomchoke and Arthurs.

Now a max of five can overtake from six. Wost case of 41 (down 3). If Robredo sees off Querrey, that'll be four from five, and no threats left in the top half.

Querrey is out as well so that's only five left - all in Andy's half of the draw. Only four of them can overtake. Worst case is WR40 (down 2) Not bad for a grandslam week when you're on the sidelines!

Chela plays Andy tomorrow morning. and overtakes if he wins

Grosjean plays Nalbandian tonight. He'll then need to beat Mayer or Haas.

Ginepri plays Blake. He'll then need to beat Hewitt or Gonzo.

Mayer plays Haas. He'll then need to beat Nalby or Grosjean and the winner from Berdych & Davydenko's segment.

Santoro plays Davydenko. He'll then need to beat Berdych or tursunov and the winner of Haas and Nalbandian's segment.

Grosjean and Santoro go out.  Just Chela, Ginepri and Mayer to go.

Worst case is now WR39 (down 1), if all three overtake. Ginepri's in the first set tiebreak against Blake.

Ginepri's out.  Just Chela and Mayer left.

Tim now can't drop in the rankings because of the Aussie Open !!

- not bad, when a lot of us were talking about him dropping out of the top 50 when he withdrew

Andy did the business for Tim: Chela goes out.

There's just Mayer left who can overtake Tim - if he wins his match with Haas tomorrow, and goes on to the semi final past Nalbandian, and Davydenko/Tursunov/Berdych.

Worst case for Tim is a gain of 1 place to WR37. He'll probably stay where he is at WR36!! - up 2 places
