Why after so much success with global stars of the tennis court did you decide to work with players who are just starting out?


Because Roger Draper offered me a lot of dosh! [OK he didn't really say that!]


Pracowalem z wiodacymi tenisistami ponad 10 lat. W koncu przyszedl czas na zmiane. Nie mozna robic wciaz tego samego, trzeba podejmowac nowe wyzwania, nawet dla zabawy cos niecos zmienic. Mam teraz okazje pokazac, ze naprawde jestem dobrym trenerem.


I worked with leading tennis players for 10 years. It was finally time for a change. You can't do the same thing all the time, you must take up new challenges, even change something or other for fun. I now have the chance to find out if I really am a good coach.


Do Wroclawia przyjechalo wielu mlodych, obiecujacych tenisistów. Czy którys wywarl na Panu szczególne wrazenie?


Lots of promising young tennis players have come to Wroclaw. Have any of them particularly impressed you?


Nie chcialbym wskazywac kogos konkretnego. Poziom tenisa jaki obserwuje w tym tygodniu jest bardzo wysoki – dotyczy to prawie wszystkich. Mielismy okazje ogladac naprawde fantastyczne mecze. Szkoda, ze nie ma wiekszej liczby kibiców na trybunach, mam nadzieje, ze w przyszlym roku bedzie z tym znacznie lepiej. Warto tu przyjezdzac, bo jak na poziom challengerowy jest to naprawde swietny turniej. Wyróznia sie na pewno Bogdanovic (smiech). Przegral co prawda z Zibem, ale Czech to dobry i doswiadczony zawodnik. Nie zawsze zaczyna sie wygrywac od poczatku kariery.


I don't want to pick out any particular player. The level of tennis I have seen this week is very high - and that applies to virtually everyone. We have had a chance to watch some really fantastic matches. It's a pity that there aren't more fans in the stands, I hope that next year it will be a lot better. It is worth coming along, because for a Challenger, this is a fantastic tournament. Of course, Bogdanovic stands out. (laughs [I'm assuming this means a 'but of course I would say that' laugh rather than an 'I'm taking the mick, he's actually pretty crap' laugh!]) It's true that he lost to Zib, but the Czech is a good and experienced player. You don't win all the time at the start of your career.

Patrzac chocby na mlodego Siergieja Bubke mysli Pan, ze moze byc kiedys taka gwiazda jak jego ojciec?


Having had a look at young Sergei Bubka, do you think he can be as big a star as his father?


Obserwowalem go juz kilka razy. To dobry tenisista. Widac, ze bardzo chce wygrywac i ma bron, zeby to osiagac. Czuc jego wewnetrzny ogien. Ale na tym poziomie sporo jest podobnych zawodników. Kto bedzie gwiazda – nie wiadomo.


I've already seen him several times. He's a good tennis player. It's clear that he really wants to win and has the weapons to achieve it. He has the fire inside him. But there are lots of players on the same level. Who will end up a star is hard to tell.


Jaka duza moze byc w tym zasluga trenera?


How much can the coach contribute to this?

Wydaje mi sie, ze kluczowy jest jednak charakter zawodnika, jego zadza zwyciestwa. Osoby, z którymi pracuje stoja jednak w drugim szeregu.


It strikes me that the character of each player is the key to his success. The people he works with are second in level of importance.


Wie Pan cos o polskich tenisistach?


Do you know anything about Polish tennis players?

Widzialem ich w tym tygodniu po raz pierwszy, darujcie, ale nazwisk nie pamietam. Wiekszosc grala dobrze i tak jak inni maja szanse sie wybic


This week, I saw them for the first time, sorry, but I don't remember their names. Most of them played well and some others have chances of [their careers] taking off.

It was a great translation, Steven...

Lundgren was talking round words to not to say anything. It was a **** of interview we made. I think even Zib is  a  more interesting interlocutor.

Thanks Nathii, glad it wasn't too bad.

Good interview as it was, Lundgren certainly seemed to be trying to get away with giving away as little information as possible, as you said. Clearly 'the art of saying nothing' is the first course that the LTA sends its new recruits on!

However, I was wondering if it was because something was lost in translation. Even if my translation was better than I thought it was, by the time what he originally said was translated into Polish and then translated back into English by me, any subtleties in what he originally said are bound to have been lost.

Hope you had a good time at the Challenger, anyway  - I see Zib's just taken the first game in the Final ... maybe you'll get to interview Eschauer after all!
