Morgan Phillips (GBR) bt (2) Sanchez de Luna (ESP) 1-6 7-6(6) 6-3
Great comeback from Phillips - I wonder if he saved any mps in the breaker??
Rd2
Morgan Phillips (GBR) vs Alessandro Da Col (ITA) WR 488
(Also, not sure if it has already been mentioned (can't be bothered checking back) but Philip Barlow and partner defaulted first round of the doubles - doesn't say what reason)
(source: tenniseurope.org)
Info on Da Col: 28 years old, has a highest ranking of 396 from August last year, had a close 3 setter in round 1.
The other seed in Morgan's quarter was also beaten in 3 sets today so potentially a decent chance of a few points here.
What a fightback from Morgan in rd1 Is that the best win of his career (opponent ranked 337) ?
Great chance to make the quarters now, I wonder whether he could make the RG qualies cut this year, theoretically possible but of course extremely tough

Last year's cut was 253. That means that Morgan will need to star winning Futures titles and Challengers very soon. It's going to be really difficult.
I find it highly amusing that so many of us are big Morgan fans out here! We need more Morgan info.

I've been following Morgan's progress for the last couple of years, was quite impressed with he was plugging away at Spanish Futures and gradually getting better (as opposed to a few other Brits who play in Spanish Futures and never seem to get better!) instead of going for easier points at home or following Amadeus around for the really easy points.
I really started taking notice when he won the Napoli Future last year, beating 4 higher-ranked players on the way. His highest-rated opponent in that tournament was Baccanello WR 360, when Morgan was ranked 750.
That could still mean that yesterday's win was the highest ranked player he has ever beaten, it's the highest I can find - e.g. when he reached the Final in Albufeira, he beat 3 higher-ranked players, but none of them were in the top 500. Such a pity that his tournament had to end this way after that.

I was following him around since early 2006 and always liked him for a random reason - I love the name 'Morgan'. Dumb reason to support a player, I know. Then he won that title with a rank of 751 and I became a huge fan of him and his dedication towards tennis.
Morgan has always been one of my favourite players. Since 2003 when I first noticed steveg website and did my dissertation on the state of British Tennis. I liked the fact that he was always in foreign tournaments and that we could follow another tournament.
Like Arka mentioned, I think his name brought my attention as well, not sure why. Happened with a few players, like Slabba, Fleming, Andy Banks and Kalaitzis.
I think this might be a break through year this year for him. He's already started off fantastically, and might break into top 400 soon
