Nicolas Lapentti is WR 68 but was ranked as high as no. 6 seven years ago (I didn't remember that, I must admit!) and reached the semi-finals of the AO in 1999, after beating ToJo in R1 then having a dream draw.
Alan has played 10 lost 10 in ATP main draws (ATP site implies 11, but I can only find 10) and will be hoping that with himself in fine form and Lapentti now in his 30s and well past his best, he can break that duck at last.
It's not the best draw he could have had though - a fellow qualifier would have been good from the point of view of potentially winning a match, while failing that, a big name player would have made it more of an occasion.
Still, Alan's clearly playing well, and Lapentti's not as tough as Baggy seemed likely to be at Wimby last year and Alan wasn't far off in that match!

Lapentti is ranked 68 in the world at the moment, but curiously, he seems to play more challengers than main tour events. I am hoping that he will be match rusty - his last match was a Challenger in his home country on Nov13, where he lost in the first round. I feel Alan has a good chance, but he prefer to get off to a decent start!
Who amongst the UK coaching entourage watched his match?
I dont think Nalby will make his first round match! Didnt he pull out of the Kooyong Classic after his first match? And it looks like hes not match fit nor physically prepared to win a best of 5 set match. I'll be good news for Mackin if he wins his 1st rd match. If seeded players pull out before the 1st round of matches are under way, do they replace them with lucky losers?
Before matches start, a seed withdrawing is replaced by the next in line to be a seed (i.e. the no. 33 seed) and a LL takes the latter's place in the draw.
So, being cynical, maybe it's better that Bandy plays and retires during his first match, or at least after play has started on day 1. (I think that's the cut-off for seeds being replaced with almost-seeds, but I'm not certain)

I reckon Mackin has a fantastic chance here. Unfortunately I won't be able to follow it but fingers crossed he can continue his great run and get his first ATP win.
