Yes weird, the two you'd expect from the draw (Boggo & Bloomers) go out and 2 that have had to upset the rankings go thru' (Marray and Mackin) Baker (who lost 2 & 2) only one that went in line with the rankings.
Report on Marray - Ghem now online at www.jonnymarray.net hoping to get quots from Jonny if I can get hold of him before he goes to bed!!!
I think we should probably have got three through today (though I would have gone for Boggo, Bloomers and Jonny, not Mackin!), so in that sense it is a bit disappointing.
Also, Boggo had more chance of qualifying if he had got through, I think. But who knows, best of luck to Marray and Mackin for QR2!

QR1: Alan Mackin WR 270 beat (q1) Davide Sanguinetti (ITA) WR 101 by 3 & 3 QR1: Jonny Marray WR 255 beat Andre Ghem (BRA) WR 190 by 6-3 7-6(2) QR1: (q10) Alex Bogdanovic WR 123 lost to George Bastl (SUI) WR 174 by 3 & 4 QR1: Richard Bloomfield WR 214 lost to (WC) Matthew Ebden (AUS) WR 897 by 6-3 5-7 8-6 QR1: Jamie Baker WR 315 lost to (q16) Wesley Moodie (RSA) WR 133 by 2 & 4
A brilliant win for Alan against the no. 1 seed and an excellent win for Jonny too, though he always looked to have a very good chance against a Brazilian clay courter, but those wins were counterbalanced by a big missed chance for Bloomers (who appears to still be having shoulder problems) and a missed opportunity for Boggo, though Bastl, while well past his best, has a lot more experience of playing ATP events than Alex does, so it wasn't the best draw he could have had.
All in all, four rankings upsets in five matches!
QR2: Alan Mackin WR 270 v Alex Bogomolov Jr (USA) WR 243
Alan lost to Bogomolov Jr in Mexico last April, but the scoreline was 6-4 6-7(5) 7-6(4), close enough to suggest that it's anybody's match on Friday.
QR2: Jonny Marray WR 255 v Okun (who slotted into Vinciguerra's seeding place when the latter withdrew) or Prpic - currently 6-4 *4-5 to Prpic.

On Friday, Alan is 2nd on Court 2 at about 00.30 GMT and Jonny is 5th on the same court not before about 05.00 GMT, probably later.
Talking of late, it's just passed 11 pm in Melbourne and Okun/Prpic are still on court - 1 set all, Prpic a break up in the 3rd. Let's hope they knacker each other out!

Not sure I'd agree about Boggo having the best chance of qualifying he did have a tough draw, I've always thought Macca had a good game for aussie open conditions, and delighted to be proved right, tho' I must admit I thought he had his work cut out today. Interestingly at Sheffield yesterday there was a reasonable bit of confidence that Alan would do well today.
Maybe this will help to explain Bloomer's exit. From LTA website:
But Richard Bloomfield can claim he was distinctly unfortunate in his 6-3, 5-7, 8-6 exit against Australia’s 897th ranked Matthew Ebden. Both men wrongly believed the match would be decided by a tie-break but Bloomfield paid the price for his mistake.
The Norfolk man served at 6-all but failed to hear the umpire’s call of 0-15. He then allowed Ebden to serve the next point which also went to the Australian and by the time both men realised their error the score had been called at 0-30.
By the rules of the game the score must stand, as Bloomfield found out to his cost when the supervisor was called to the court. When play resumed his Australian opponent made the most of his surprise lead on Bloomfield’s serve and quickly wrapped up the match.

oh man, thats a big mistake to make. iahve seen it happen b4 where people forget that they are in a TB, but never so far as to the oppnent then serving. why didnt the umpire stop it??

Jonny has not played Prpic before. Prpic beat Bloomers on the way to the Lanzarote Challenger title last year, but has not done much since, losing to both Baker and Mackin later year.

Prpic is well known to the british guys, he plays in Britain quite a bit, and has played lots of them, he hits the ball pretty hard from the baseline and is a good chaser, he's only little but pretty strong.
He'll certainly not be phased by a player of Jonny's style as he has played against players like that quite a bit, an excellent opportunity for Jonny tho' albeit Prpic will probably see it the same way.
Wow....I just read all through your posts....thanks for the updates etc....I really feel bad Bloomers lost. When I went to bed I thought he'd win it.
Boggo....I don't know what to say....I was thinking I'd wake up to find Bloomers, Mackin and Boggo in the second round....happy Johnny is there, but I feel really bad about Bloomers & Boggo being gone. I thought Boggo would qualify....what do I know?
I think all of us here also learnt a very important lesson today:
Don't give Doug your telephone number !
If you don't know what I'm getting then read back through this thread. Doug did a fantastic job of doing scores throughout the night, for me it was really great to be able to wake up and then read through the matches as if I was following them live game-by-game. However Doug really wanted to ring Drew up to let him know the Mackin score Unfortunately at that time it was about 4am GMT !!
