RE: AOQ Men

QR1: Alan Mackin WR 270 v (q1) Davide Sanguinetti (ITA) WR 101

QR1: Jonny Marray WR 255 v Andre Ghem (BRA) WR 190 ((q23) Vinciguerra and (q9) Marach are the seeds in this section)

QR1: (q10) Alex Bogdanovic WR 123 v George Bastl (SUI) WR 174 ((q30) Berrer is the other seed in this section)

QR1: Richard Bloomfield WR 214 v (WC) Matthew Ebden (AUS) WR 897 (the winner to meet (q14) Bozoljac or Cakl)

QR1: Jamie Baker WR 315 v (q16) Wesley Moodie (RSA) WR 133 ((q17) Zib is the other seed in this section)

Rubbish draws for the two Scots, and not a great one for Boggo either, despite him being seeded, but Jonny and Richard havea good chance of getting through at least one round.

Bad draw for Mackin.
Jamie B's is also bad, but he may have an outside chance against Moodie.

Boggo can very much qualify from that draw.

Marray has a decent chance and Richard will find it tough to lose that match unless he is injured.

Nasty draw for Mackin, he's really unlucky as the Rebound Ace will suit him down to the ground. However, if he's serving well, I reckon he might have a chance of at least taking a set off Sanguinetti. Whenever I've seen Sanguinetti play in the past he's always looked pretty ordinary, I've been amazed that he's made top 50. Unfortunately he is on form, made the Chennai quarters last week before getting hammered by Nadal. He beat Economdis and Mahut.

Jonny and Richard have the best draws of the non-seeded Brits Hopefully their respective shoulder injuries are a lot better Ghem lost in rd1 of the New Calendonia challenger last week in straights to Lisnard (ranked about 100 places lower). He's definately beatable for Jonny, plays the entire year just on clay if he can. The faster rebound ace courts will give Jonny more of an advantage aswell.

Richard shouldn't have too many problems against Ebden, that's a great draw. Hopefully Richard can give him a really heavy drubbing to erase a little of the pain from the cricket. Ebden's 2006 highlights were making a semi and a quarter-final in Aussie futures and on those results he's been given a qualies wildcard. Colin Fleming beat him in straights last summer. Looking further ahead, it'll probably be Cakl awaiting in rd2 which is a match that Richard could win. Cakl is ranked 180 and qualified for Doha a week ago before getting hammered 2 and 2 in rd1 by Choker-nelli.

I think that Bogman will surely be quite happy with that draw. He leads Bastl 3-1 on head-to-heads. He won 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 at Surbiton 2003, 7-6, 4-1 ret at Wroclaw 2005 and 6-1, 7-6 at Newport 2006. Bastl's sole win came at Wrexham in 2005 - 7-6, 6-1 which prompted one of the legendary Pabster rants (Count will know what I'm on about.) Bastl's now 31, he's not the same player he was a few years ago, didn't start the season too well, came within a point of defeat against Baker and then lost to Cakl in 3 in Doha. He's a serve-volleyer which suits Alex as he likes a target.

Jamie has a horrible draw. Moodie may be ranked 133 now but he's got the game of a top 50 player. He would be a handful for any player in the AO main draw on the faster Rebound Ace. He started 2007 in Adelaide, qualified before losing to Kunitsyn. I'm hoping for a massive upset here

What's happened to these courts yesterday they were too slow for Josh seems they've speeded up overnight!!

Think Rebound Ace would be pretty much neutral territory for a clay courter v a Grass courter, do you agree?

Spoke to Jonny he's never heard of Ghem so has no idea what he's going to be up against, he beat Gustavo Keurten last year in the Brazil Open ATP event, that was his first ever ATP win.

A lot might depend on how Jonny's shoulder stands up, if he can get powerful first serves in he could be tough to break, if he cant he's a sitting duck at the net with a high bouncing court.

not all bad news for mackin.  v possible that with a bit of luck, sanguinetti may get caterpaulted into the main draw with a withdrawal, and then mackin would have a great chance to qualify!

you never know... though not overly likely as players will prob wait a few more days until pulling out of the main draw if slightly injured.

Good point there. Someone really needs to go and kick Nadal....

In any case, there are loads of doubts - Nalbandian, Davydenko, Nadal....

Tim should have helped Mackin out by announcing it late.

As far as I know, Lucky Loser spots don't come into play till the first ball is thrown up for serve.

so alan could get really lucky then if sang gets promoted and their is no one around to take his slot.....

also it must be really annoying to be the top seed in a GS qualies - just one more place and i'd be in, grrrr.

One problem with this - Sanguinetti is not next in line for a Main Draw place...it's Alves (who for some reason did not enter qualifying
