Murray signs 1 million Highland Spring deal

TENNIS star Andy Murray has signed a sponsorship deal worth at least £1million.

The 19-year-old will start 2007 wearing the logo of water firm Highland Spring on his shirt.

The deal replaces an earlier one with juice company Robinsons.

The company also agreed to be the new sponsor to Team Murray, which includes Andy's older brother Jamie and mum Judy, Scotland's former national tennis coach.

Andy said: "Proper hydration is playing a bigger role in my fitness and training regime with my coach (Brad Gilbert) encouraging me to drink much more water to keep me at the top of my game.

Apparently, it's thought to be the biggest shirt sponsorship deal in tennis

This deal was covered on page 3 of today's Guardian. In the sport section they predict that Jamie Murray is the tennis player to watch in 2007, he has also signed up to Highland spring. They also predict that Graeme Dyce will be a player to watch after 2007 mainly based on the endorsment of Bolletri. I'd say Dan Cox has a better chance but it is good to see the Guardian recognising that there are also sportsmen north of the border.

The article points out that although Andy (and Jamie) will be knocking back gallons of the stuff in training, when competing players are contractually obliged to drink the water provided by the tournanament sponser.
