This one is the first of the two warm ups to the AO Juniors. The cut is really high at this moment, but hopefully there will be quite a few (non British) wihdrawals.
What's odd is that this Thompson boy has an Australian domestic ranking. He used to represent South Africa earlier, is British now, trains in the US by the look of his events, but why Australia?
Dan plays Valentin Dimov of Bulgaria; he is ranked 67 in Juniors and doesn't have a men's point. Hopefully Dan won't be rusty after being out of action for almost two and a half months due to injury. He can take it if he plays well.
Dyce gets an easier draw in the form of Bence-Gyula Toth of Hungary; ranked 110 in the world and without a men's point. Dyce is due to play Eysseric in round two.
It will take a lot of effort as he will have to beat a seed and then there will be Berankis. I don't know if things that happened in 2004 count for much, but Berankis has a superb record against Dan.
Dyce will need two wins and it'll be extremely difficult for him to beat Eysseric, who will become the world number one next Monday.
It'll be interesting to see who they play with in doubles. They might decide to team up like they did at Wimbly.
In doubles, Dan has decided to team up with my favourite non-British Junior player, Lazare Kukhalashvili of Georgia.
Kukhalashvili is the highest ranked 1991 born player (37) even though he has been out of action since July!! He did the Eddie Herr-Orange Bowl double as a 12 year old and reached the finals of Les Petit As the year after Daniel did.
I don't really know if two world class players make a world class team, but let us hope so.
(On a side note, I wonder if Dan asked Lazare to play with him or if it was the other way round. )
Dyce plays with Andrew Thomas of Australia. Thomas isn't the player he was two years back when he absolutely dominated the European circuit but he is good even now.
