Davenport likely to retire

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tennis/6178019.stm

Great player, was the first to really challenge the dominance of Hingis and take over the world no 1 spot from her.

Can't believe she hasn't won a slam since 2000, she's been in at least 3 finals since then. Should have won the 2005 Aussie Open, was a set and a break up against Serena but lost concentration and something like the next 8 games and at Wimbledon later that year she may have won that dramatic final against Venus but sustained an injury late in the 3rd. The only slam she didn't win was the French and she never looked like doing that, her lack of mobility around the court was really exposed on the clay. Would have surely won twice as many slams if it hadn't been for the emergence of the Williams sisters who took athleticism and the power game to another level.

However, Davenport has had a longer career than she expected, having been talking about her plans for retirement for a number of years. In 2001 she said she'd be very surprised if she was still playing at 30
