Well I guess it's time we checked out how Andy's ranking might be affected by the action in week 1. Here's the table of the players around Andy's position (C)GC77.

Well, that's how things stand right now. I'd expect a few players to withdraw, and maybe one to get a wildcard into a draw......
Stepanek, Hrbaty and Youzhny all drop ranking places because of points they are defending from 2006.
Also, please note that the ranking points for 2007 competitions don't seem to have been formally published. I gather that Adelaide round 1 losers don't get any points, nor do those who go out without winning a match in the Round Robin group, who didn't go through the knockout round.
Whether round 1 losers get points in Dubai or Chennai isn't clear. So I've assumed they get 5 as they did in 2006. None of the players in Andy's table woud have any use for a measly 5 points anyway.
I expect Bethan will be doing the in- depth analysis at some point over the next few weeks, so in the meantime, I'll just say that Andy can rise to 14th if he makes the final, and that Gasquet, Hewitt and Stepanek can all overtake him if they win in Adelaide.
Rob, my reading of the RR format explanation is that ALL tournaments will not give points to first round losers.
"The last important aspect with regards to points is that players who lose in the knockout stage or player s who do not win round robin matches will not earn any points. That is in line with the new ATP ranking procedure of not giving points to first round losers at all the other events. Only wins will give players points"
I confess I don't understand this. If losers get no points and winners get second round points, then nobody gets first round points???

My reading of it is:
Roound 1 Adelaide: Del Potro beats Spadea (sorry Vince!) Del Potro gets 10 points, Spadea gets 0
Round- Robin round: Del Potro vs Djokovic & Clement. Djoko wins both his matches, and Del Potro beats Clement. Djoko gets 40 for reaching the quarters. Clement gets 0, Del Potro gets another 20 for winning his game against Clement, and goes out with 30 points in the bag.
The good news is....I think I finally understand all the columns on that table! Took me long enough. Basically....Andy needs to get to the third round to get any points, but he can't lose anything. Right?
I think it's the same thing that's been posted on steveg, and it certainly makes what happens in the Round- Robin events clear ("clear" being a relative term")
But I can't find anything that confirms what happens in the non- round- robin tournaments, such as Doha and Chennai, for first round losers. In 2006, they got 5 points. In 2007, I think they might not get any.

Welcome to the brotherhood! Yes, andy can't lose anything, and will only score more than his 18th result if he makes the quarters and picks up 60 points.
Meanwhile, Berdych is defending 55 points from last year, so these come off his total and his 19th result, a 15 replaces it, so he ends up losing 40 points.
Right, I have been rootling around trying to make sense of what happens in points in non-RR tournaments. If you look at the Chennai fact sheet on steveg, the points work exactly the same as last year - 5 for first round.
So I haven't a clue what that reference to no points for losers in the first round in other tournaments in the RR explanation, is all about. Nothing seems to have changed.
It's all seems very strange. I guess the only thing we can do is go with whatever we believe to the right the first week and then work it out for the second week based on whether those going out first round get any points!!
Does anyone have any ATP contacts? Or is there an email address somewhere that we could ask them?
