Goran was 5-2 up in that champions tiebreak aswell but the serve let him down and he lost 5 straight points.
Haarhuis played an excellent match though, some of his retrieving was phenomenal. During the match, John Lloyd said how whenever he goes to the US Open he gets really fed up as during most of the rain delays they show highlights from the Connors-Haarhuis match from 1991 when Haarhuis had a big lead but went on to lose in 5
Out of interest, how does Haarhuis qualify for the seniors tour ?? He's not won a slam or been world no 1
Yeah as Haarhuis himself said "How many people want to come and see Paul Haarhuis play at the Albert Hall ! "
How many wildcards do they get ? If possible they should try and get him one, it'd be a bit ridiculous if the twice champion doesn't get a chance to defend his title !
I thought I heard that Haarhuis plays other champions tour events though Or am I getting muddled up.
Sampras playing next year would be brilliant I think he'd dominate it though, only Ivanisevic on a good day could trouble him on fast surfaces.
I had assumed he was there because he'd won a grand slam doubles too, but the official word on this is:
"To be eligible to compete on the ATP Champions Tour, players must have been either a World No. 1 during their competitive playing careers, a Grand Slam singles finalist, or a singles player in a victorious Davis Cup team; and they should have retired from the ATP circuit. Each event can also invite two players of its choice to take wild cards."
The Dutch haven't won the DC recently, so I guess that means Haarhuis must have got a wild card. It seems odd to me that he would have got a wild card in London, he can't be the biggest draw fo the fans. Still, nobody can complain that he didn't make good use of it!
