Round Robin - Here is how it will work

What I find interesting is the fact that ALL 1st round losers will get zero points rather than 5 - e.g. If Alex is DA in Week 1 he will need to win a match to increase his points.

Round Robin Tournaments in 2007

As the deadline for the first week of events in 2007 is fast approaching, I would like to update you on the points, prize money and format of the Round Robin events that are going to be played in 2007.

First, let's talk about the points. Below you will find the table of points for all the events. There are a few important things that one needs to know with regards to the ranking points:

1.From quarterfinals on, everyone will earn the same amount of points, regardless of how they won their respective group. For example, the quarterfinals of Adelaide are worth 40 points for all players who lose in that round.

3. The second clarifying point is that points from the knockout stage and round robin wins are just for those who do not move into the quarterfinal stage of the event. For example, a player who wins in the knockout round, wins a round robin match and does not qualify for the quarterfinal stage will get 30 points for his participation in Adelaide. Had the same player played only in the round robin stage, won a match and did not qualify for the quarterfinals stage, he would earn 20 points in Adelaide.

2.The last important aspect with regards to points is that players who lose in the knockout stage or player s who do not win round robin matches will not earn any points. That is in line with the new ATP ranking procedure of not giving points to first round losers at all the other events. Only wins will give players points.

Next topic is prize money. Below you will find the prize money breakdown for the tournaments that we currently have as round robin events but the list is subject to change. Here are a few pointers with regards to the prize money.

1. The most important thing that I want to point out is that an undefeated winner of a round robin tournament will get the same amount of prize money as he would in a straight elimination tournamen t with the same level of prize money.

2. If a player loses in the knockout round, he will be awarded the prize money listed below as knockout participation. Also, if a player fails to win a match in the round robin stage, he is guaranteed the amount of prize money listed as the RR participation category. Furthermore, round robin wins are worth between 2,000 and 2,500 (Dollars or Euros). The money won in the Round Robin stage will carry over. So, the winner's money does not include the earnings of a player in the round robin stage. For example, an undefeated tournament winner in Bastad will win 51,820 euros plus 4,000 euros from his round robin wins.

The last thing I would like to clarify is with regards to the format itself. The formats are:

24 Round Robin Tournament – 8 groups of 3 players. Players will play against each other within the group. The 8 winners of the groups reach the quarterfinal stage and the tournament is played under the single elimination format from this point forward. Qualifying draw will consist of 12 players. Tournament winners will play 5 matches (except for qualifiers).

32 Hybrid Round System – 16 players participate in knockout round while the top 16 players wait in 8 groups (2 per group). The 8 winners of the knockout stage will be place d in th ose 8 groups, forming the 8 groups of 3 players. From this point forward, the tournament is played exactly like the 24 round robin event. Qualifying draw will consist of 16 players. Tournament winners that come from the round robin stage will play 5 matches and those players who come from the knockout stage will play 6 matches (except for qualifiers)

48 Round Robin Tournament - 16 groups of 3 players. Players will play against each other within the group. The 16 winners of the groups reach the Round of 16 stage and the tournament is played under the single elimination format from this point forward. Qualifying draw will consist of 24 players. Tournament winners will play 6 matches.

I think I need a couple of aspirin.

I'm sure it will all become clear once we get used to it. . .

Thanks a lot for that! Much appreciated.

I love the idea of no points for first round losses. Will prevent cases like Donald Young, where people are ranked a few hundred places above their ability.

The should do the same for Challengers. People like Marcel Goodman can get direct entries into many Futures with wild card first round points that they got.

Points for Futures qualies, even 0.5 of it, should be another thing that they should introduce soon.

I agree with the 0 points for 1st round losses, tho' I think they should increase points for qualifying to ensure that people are still motivated to enter events ambitiously.

Oh darn, do the zero first round points for losses NOT apply to Challengers? I had hoped they would, to make the buying of wild cards pointless.

Thanks for that Seagul, i think i understand....!

I don't really mind whether they give points for first round losses or not, although it won't allow the middlemen to reduce their season length as if they have a spate of going out first round they'd be more inclined to enter more events rather than not have enough tournaments to count in their ranking.

However, I do think futures qualifiers should get a point, it's horrid that they can sweat it out in three and even four qualifying rounds, draw a top seed and end the day with nothing.

Still seems a shame to mess everythong around to me!

Just strip R1 losers of points and go back to straihgt knockout events!

Look what "round robins" or "group stages" have done for the "Champions League".

This is a joke...

i really dont understand the win/loss ratio in group matches! so if 1 person loses 1 match he get no points but what if he wins his next match does he still get any points? and the knockout only occurs for qualies right?

ok, i am thinking i am making a bit of sense out of this.

Round robin points are won, for winning just 1 out of the 2 matches you will play. of cousre winning both matches mean you qualify

they must have a system for working out ties where all 3 win 1 match, maybe head to head in the RR or maybe on sets won. Winning just 1 match and qualiying will give you QF points (and moe if you progress futher).

the knock out stage will not be at all tournamnets, but it appears that it could been seen like the fiinal qualifying round to make the group stages in the champions league. eg this year arsenal and liverpool only had to play one qualiyfing match to make the round robin, where as some teams had to play about 3 matches.

so in the 32 hybrid events, the top 16 of the 23-25 (depending on SE slots) DA players, seeds as such, will auto be in the RR (but if they fail to win a match in the RR its nil points for them). I am assuming that the top 16 will also be split on some seeding basis in the gropus much like today events so fed and rafa cant be in the same group, probably the top 8, then the next randomly

The lower 16, inc the players who have come through qualies (and wild cards i guess), play a normal match with the winner progessing to the RR. The winners KO points are safe as they say in game shows. Then depending on their results theywill go home with just the ko points, or possibly the ko plus a rr win points. A DE into the KO round who loses the KO match gets nil points, and quailfer who loses in the ko just gets qualies points.

with the other size events i guess qualifers make it straight into the RR when the qualify.

only 10 events of the year will be KO, and not queens by the look of it.

i havent looked at the prize money, i guess thats more intersting for the players. i hope what i have written helps. i did it as much for me tho as wiritng it down heled me get straight in my head.
