RE: British tennis frontpage for this site

I've had a go at doing one of the webpages - the schedule page as RedCabbage suggested:

To view it, go to:
http://www.freewebs.com/britishtennis/2007%20schedules%20.htm

At the moment it doesn't include junior schedules for those first two-three weeks of Jan and the men's tournament info for week 2 isn't out yet.

Let me know what you think, the banner which Drew's brother is going to create will appear in the grey area at the top.

Do you think the page needs to be made a little flashier, and any suggestions for doing so ?

I want to have it so that users can click on ATP Chennai and ATP Doha on that page and be sent to the relevant thread on here, I tried one method and that didn't work, does anyone know the html code to do that ??

hate to say it, but it's very cluttered.

Things to change:

1) make it a table, so that the event name is in one column and the players playing in another

2) put the event titles in a different font/colour/size/boldness....

I don't know whether I'll be able to type it here, but a standard link looks like:

<a href="http://www.activeboard.com/forum.spark?forumID=61841&p=3&topicID=9260524">ATP Doha Tournament</a>

I agree with point 1 to an extent. But I would make it a table without trying to make it look like a table. I've never been much of a fan of web pages looking like spreadsheets :)

Point 2 - good idea. I agree.

OK, thanks for the feedback, I'll have a go at trying to sort that.

RedCabbage thanks for that html code, I'll see if that works, do you mean href at the beginning ?

What do you mean by making it a table without trying to make it look like a table

- mainly, I think, not to put obvious lines in there:  do it with shading or just with white space.

I'd guess redcabbage finds steveg's tables a bit too basic: http://stevegtennis.com/atpres.htm

You realise that we're going to have 100 different views on what the best style is, don't you!

Basically...no borders! But that's purely my opinion. I'm sure it would be easier to make a table readable when there's borders.

I do mean "href". Not sure what it means. Basically the HTML tag is an <a> (I think it stands for "anchor") and the "href" is an attribute of that <a> - i.e. where you go when you click on it. You can include other attributes like "target" which can be used to open the page in a new window for example. You can define also the font, colour, size etc within the <a>.

e.g. <a href="http://www.google.com" target="#">Google in a new window</a>

Lol, I agree we're going to have a lot of different views on this !!

I actually like steveg's tables, I'll try and create something like that, it looks pretty good. The colouring is the important part I think, I'll probably copy the colour scheme

:) I think trying to design a website by commitee might be asking for trouble! I think you're doing the right thing by just designing it yourself and asking for opinions. It's up to you which opinions you go with.

That certainly looks better.

I suggest you get the main sections sorted out in terms of what you wnat to put up there, then ask Drew's brother to spend a couple of hours with the look and feel - make sure you have a standard font, standard colours etc...

I like the second one (can't see the first presumably because you've taken it down).

Looks good! I'm loving it.

I have a few comments:

It has a typo - You have "ABS Classic, Auckland Tier 1V" and not "ABS Classic, Auckland Tier IV".

By the way, I am a terrible stickler for consistency in naming.
Shouldn't we have tournament names in one way only - not both sponsor name and place names.

For example, we have one venue "ATP Auckland" and one sponsor name "ABS Classic, Auckland Tier IV".
Shouldn't we go for either 1) Venue names "ATP Auckland" and "WTA Auckland tier IV"

or

2)Sponsor names "Heineken Open" and "ABS Classic, Auckland Tier IV".

Sorry for being a pedant, but I think that websites should always be consistent. Feel free to ignore me.

This schedule looks great in the sense that the blue writing on a yellow background creates a fine contrast without hurting our eyes. It's very important that you don't have to try hard to read a website. I guess that this page really suits that criterion.

Good points, Arka.  Can I suggest that we just copy exactly how steveg names his events: makes it easy for whoever is doing the updating: the job then becones trawling the acceptance lists, rather than worrying about names & formats.
