Panesar showed great character to keep going and get the wickets despite a couple of Aussies spanking him around.

Reports suggest Harmison bowled the best, and the stats agree. He was really accurate and really fast. Looks to me like he's found his rhythm. That can only be good for England!

Cook is out for 15.

Caught in slips off McGrath

36-1

I think the boys have been a little too positive given they only had 50mins to bat.

Still, at least they scored a few runs before the inevitable happened!

Oh no.

Bell caught behind off Lee for a duck.

37-2

THis is reminding me of the first test at Lords last year when we ran through their batting but they came back and ran through ours even better and won.

We need to preserve any more wickets and continue to be able to say this was our day.

25 mins left today

unless cook pulls out a blinder next innings we should really look about repalcing him, his average is only 21ish, thats not good enough imo, but i dont know who with?

12wickets and counting on the first day.

I think you're right!

I'm just glad 10 of the 12 belong to Australia!

Hussey is still proving ultra difficult to remove

51-2 at the close!

Strauss is 24 and Collingwood 10.

Overall a hugely successful day for the POMS!

Wonderful for Monty getting a 5 for but look at Harmison....if it were not for Freddie dropping him at slip he could have had a 5 for....with both Harmy and Monty bowling like this and with Freddie / Hoggie chipping in it is looking good.....just down to the batters....Disapointed for Cook...great ball from Lee....heres hoping they can get a 200 run lead...then bowl them out again with at least a day to spare !!!

I'm going to admit defeat in trying to remain positive about this team. They are doing nowhere near as bad as the media would suggest. They're just up against a better team than them and they're missing some vital ingredients (Vaughan's captaincy, S.Jones batting, selectors with balls)

But they will probably lose 5-0 now.

Once it goes to three-nil it doesn't actually matter anymore so they might win or draw one but there's no chance of England winning while this series is alive.

The Aussies are too good and too intense.

Poor old Strauss keeps getting given out when he's not though!

the aussies are just too good. our batting has been woefull, i know styrauus has bene unlucky, but over the 1st too tests out only player with a 100+ av is collingwood (and that may drop after todaying innings) whilst the aussies have 3 players over 100. but cook and bell are averaging 22 & 34 respectvily wihich for a 2 & 3 are just not good enough. and 34 is our 3rd best average!! flintoff also has not been upto it.
