I thought that we could post various tennis trivia questions in this thread [should they be mutiple choice or not ?]

I'll start:

What was unusual about Virginia Wade's opponent in rd1 of the 1977 US Open ?

Is it [a] she was from Mars, [,b,] she had been a man [c] she was Navratilova playing in her first slam [d] she was the first British player to qualify for a Grand Slam

b - I reckon she must have played Renee Richards, else you wouldn't have thought of putting that option!

If it wasn't Renee Richards then I'll say that hats off to David for thinking of that confusing option.

I'll go for Renee Richards.

Yes it was b and it was Renee Richards. I was amazed so many people knew, I only read about it in passing in a magazine. Can someone enlighten me a little more on the story ? I assume it caused quite a controvery at the time, did Wade win ?

New question:

In what year was a tiebreak first used at the US Open ?

[a] 1965 [,b] 1968 [c] 1970 [d] 1975

its a gamble, but it was the year professional tennis started for both men and women at the same time, 1975

Renee Richard's Wikipedia entry tells us that she actually had to go to the court to play in the USO!!

c) for the tiebreak question

The Renee Richards story did cause a bit of a stir back in the late 1970s (I was only 11 in 1977 and I remember hearing about it) but I don't think she was ever that good, even after she became a female player.

There's quite a detailed story at http://www.43people.com/profile/view/365088.

She ended up being part of Martina Navratilova's support team and once claimed to be the most normal person in it!

I have one. Makes it more fun if you don't cheat and research the answer lol. Let's just see who gets the closest guess.

How many senior professional tournaments has Alex Bogdanovic been number 1 seed in?

No qualifiers, only main draws count from Futures right up to Grand Slam level.
