Tough R2 though. Ozga and Kerber, who like beating Brits, Kerber particularly recently

Yeah nasty draw for Amanda, her opponent is ranked 112 and has been top 100 this year and has played regularly on the WTA tour.

Great win for Anne, can't get much better than that

It really is a kind draw as next up is Polish wildcard Justyna Jegiolka [who whitewashed another wildcard in round 1]. The talented Pole is just 15, ranked 391 in juniors and 1398 in seniors. Anne should make the quarters here.

Though I have made this mistake before. I can just see jamatthews posting that I shouldn't be so optimistic and this Polish girl is a future top 10 player and grand slam champ

Get in there Anne! Good to see her taking advantage of a decent draw. Hopefully she can now prove her class by winning this thing.

Anne also reached the doubles semis with a 6-3, 6-2 win.

Anne now faces Belarussian qualifier Olga Govortsova in the quarters. Govortsova shocked the top seed [ranked 107] in rd2. She's the current junior no 8 and has made the quarters of the US Open juniors for two years running. She's ranked 349 in seniors. This year her best result was in Feburary when she qualified and reached the quarters of a 75K in Las Vegas. She also qualified for WTA Tashkent in October, taking the 1st set 6-1 against world no 82 Rodianova before losing in 3 in rd1.

Well done Anne! With Mel South doing well down under maybe these girls are going to put up a proper fight over the British number 1 spot. With Baltacha coming back from injury things could get exciting!

Wow, what an amazing result !!!!

You wouldn't believe from that scoreline that Govorsova had knocked out the top seed [ranked 107] in the previous round.

I agree RedCabbage, things are going to be very interesting regarding the British no 1 spot next year. Mel South is definately on the up and if she can maintain her ranking through the glut of points she's got to defend from mid-June to end of July, then I reckon she'll end 2007 in the top 150. Anne has been mostly pretty consistent in beating players ranked lower than her, she needs to start upping her game and beating more players ranked in the top 150 if she's going to get close to the top 100. Katie's game and ranking have both really taken off since August, I think she'll also be in there competing for the no 1 spot and in the top 150 in 2007. Maybe Sarah Borwell can get further in the top 200 aswell in 2007 if she can sort out her shoulder problems. Jamatthews, I guess you've seen Sarah play, what do you reckon ?

Also, of course, Naomi's going to be top 200 before long. With Bally as always, it'll depend whether she can stay injury and illness free, she's had such dreadful luck and has suffered seemingly every ailment under the sun. She's starting 2007 on the GB indoor circuit.

In today's semis Anne plays 3rd seeded Ukrainian Yulia Beygelzimer who's ranked 112. In September she reached a high of 83. They've played once before, in juniors. Beygelzimer won 6-1, 6-4. In this tournament she beat Amanda Keen 6-3, 6-2 in rd1 and in the quarters beat Kristina Barrois [wr:129] 6-3, 6-4. This year she's won a 50K+H challenger, made two 75K quarters, three 25K quarters and a 50K quarter and semi aswell as qualifying for the US Open and winning a couple of matches in WTAs.
