25K Jakarta

Main draw begins on 6th November.

Katie will be the 2nd seed [hopefully she's fully recovered by then from her mystey illness].

Melissa Berry will be seeded 2 in qualifying so I imagine Bladetiger will be keeping a close eye on this tournament

Melissa didn't have to qualify, she got in directly.

Some more info on their rd1 opponents:

Melissa's opponent, Cho is ranked 518. She's played entirely in Asia this year, reaching two 10K semis and a 25K quarters. She's won quite a few matches at 25K level. Will be big favourite against Melissa but this is one of the better draws Melissa could have got
in a 25K.

Katie's opponent is a 16 year old who's ranked 183 in juniors and has a senior ranked of 935. I guess she's the top Indonesian junior. She's made a 10K quarter-final and semi-final in Jakarta this year. However, provided Katie is over her illness she shouldn't really be troubled

Mixed news [the Tiger won't be too happy]:

Cho thrashed Melissa 6-1, 6-3

Katie had a slow start and dropped the first set 7-5 but recovered to win the next two 6-2, 6-4.

That's great news

Unfortunately she lost in the doubles quarters in 3 sets

Info on her quarter-final opponent:

Tedjakusuma is 30 and ranked 328. She reached a career high of 242 earlier this year. So far in this tournament, she's defeated two Koreans who have been ranked a lot lower, very easily. Her best results this year have been making a semi and 2 quarters in 25Ks in the States. She beat Mel South 6-3, 6-2 at the start of the year. My prediction is Katie to win in 3.

Unfortunately Katie got outplayed and lost 6-1, 6-3

Some information on her rd2 singles win and doubles semi loss which were watched by an Indonesian tennis fan:

"Katie was emotional both in singles and dubs...She kept screaming when she made errors...When she got a bad call in her dubs' match, she screamed bull**** towards the chair umpire and she also threw her racquet..."

Next up is a 75K next week in Taiwan. The field is very strong with several top 100 players

Just read the LTA report on her match, conditions sound pretty tough out there:

After her rd2 win, Katie said, "It's extremely hot and humid in Jakarta, but I think I've coped quite well considering the circumstances.

"I struggled a bit in my first match, but I did well to win it in the end, as my opponent seemed to be quite a promising junior player.

"In the opening match, I played from 11am until 2pm...it was almost 40C, and the tournament couldn't even provide any ice or cool boxes on court.

"Effectively, I was drinking boiling water! I spoke to the organisers about this after the match, and suggested they got some ice on court, otherwise myself and a few other players might die!

"Not sure if I'm exaggerating there or not! Needless to say we had some ice on court today (Thursday), and my performance was much better than yesterday, too!"
