Boggo's yo- yo existence continues.  This week, he's not defending any points, and so starts the week by climbing two places from 120th to 118th. Carsen  & Kubot drop behind him.  Edit: Llodra's win in Kolding means he no longer drops behind Alex. Philippoussis's win means that he no longer drops behind Alex. Hartfield's win means that Alex ends week 42 at 120th rather than 119th. The end result of all the finals is that Alex starts at 120th rather than 119th, and climbs to 118th rather than 115th as the defended points drop off.


This was posted before we know the result of the week 42 Llodra- Sluiter final in Kolding, the Philippousis - Delic final in Calabasas, and the Hartfield final in Bogota. These will affect both Alex's starting position and how many competitors drop behind him this week.  Edit: I've updated this post to reflect that now.


Alex is now in some exalted company.  Coria and Johansson join Novak and Pavel as ex- top 10 players now slumming it with Alex and his peers.


Others dropping places are Schuettler, Delgardo, Novak and Delic.

I've been sharpening the pins all day so hopefully they'll work this week.


Firstly the good news: Alex has a sniff of a chance of breaking the top 100 this week! Here's how that could happen. (Don't get your hopes up too much as it requires a lot of things to go Boggo's way - UBF this is aimed at you )


If Alex wins first round he will not gain any places.


Second round, he will gain a possible four places, providing Pavel, Llodra, and Hartfield all lose their first round matches and Waske fails to reach the semis.


A quarter final win will see Alex move up at least three places and potentially 8 if Vik, Johansson and Scheuttler all go out first round (and Vik has less mandatory points than Alex, I'm not sure if he does or not) and pless falls before the quarters whilst Vicente goes out before the semis.


A semi final win would see Alex raise his ranking a possible three more places (one definite) if Doulhy went out first round and Roitman followed before the quarter final stage.


Winning the tournament would see Alex gain one more place with a further three up for grabs, providing Pashanski and Devilder didn't reach the quarters and Alves failed to get to the semis.


Best case would see Alex at 415 points, and 98 in the rankings so if two or more of the above mentioned competitors went a round further than I've said it wouldn't happen regardless of what Alex does this week. However, we can but dream!

The following threats and the level they require to overtake are based on the premise that Boggo goes out first round.


Economonidis(qf), Bolelli(2), Kunitsyn(qf), Gabashvili(qf), Fraile(s), Novak(qf), Navarro Pastor(s), Berlocq(f), Saretta(f), Mello(w), Lu(w), Carlsen(w), Eschauer(w), Moodie(qf), Zib(s).


A max of two threats can overtake in Nottingham. A max of 2 from Montevideo (or whatever that one's called). All 3 in Basel can overtake (but don't worry two of them face Gonzalez and Federer in round one so it's unlikely!). A max of 2 can overtake in St Petersburg.


So worst case for Boggo this week is a drop of 9 places to 126(127 if Delic has won in Calabasas)

The table and the first post have been updated to reflect the results of the Challenger finals overnight: Alex starts at 120th rather than 119th, and climbs to 118th rather than 115th as the defended points drop off his competitors


Last week wasn't a good one for Alex's ranking. Hopefully this week will see his luck changing.

More results from St Petersburg:


Vik's gone out to a Latvian wildcard called Gulbis.


Kubot's qualified: he's now just a point behind Alex He plays Sluiter next: time for Ramon to do Alex a favour!


Gabashvilli's conqueror was  Moodie,who shoots up onto the table: he'll overtake if he beats the winner of Davydenko vs Santoro.

Kubot, Kunitsyn, Saretta and Moodie advance.


Vik, Fraile and Gabashvili go out.


So far so good for Alex.


Boggo himself, Economidis, Waske, Pless and Lu  play in Nottingham today.


Vicente, Berlocq and Navarro- Pastor play in Montevideo.


Novak plays in Basel. Schuettler and Pavel play in St Petersburg.


 No- one can overtake Alex today, and he can't overtake anyone.  Novak & Economidis are the biggest threats. Pavel and Waske are the closest targets.

Thomas Johansson has won his R1 match in St Pete's and puts 20 more points between himself & Alex.  Alex needs to win the tournament to overtake him now
